Coronation Street favourite Chris Gascoyne has admitted it was weird leaving his role of Peter Barlow behind after he exited the cobbles in an emotional farewell on Tuesday.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday the star shared a goodbye message with fans after playing the cab driver for 23 years.

Fans were left in floods of tears after Peter’s final scenes on Boxing Day, as his wife Carla (Alison King) bought him a one-way ticket out of Weatherfield.

The actor, 55, admitted it was weird filming his final scenes as he hung up his iconic black coat and green jacket for the last time.

He said: ‘I have just packed the dressing room up. It is my last scene tomorrow and then I’m off.

‘It was a bit odd, I hung Peter’s peacoat up the one with the black collar and the green jacket for the taxi driver so that felt a bit weird.’

The star also thanked everyone who has supported him over the years.

‘First and foremost thanks for watching. Thanks for all the people and fans that have really supported me and cheered me on over the years.’

Yet it seems it might not be a forever goodbye, as Chris didn’t rule out a return to the soap in the future.

He said: ‘It has been a pleasure to play Peter for 23 years and again thank you everybody.

‘Will I be back? Who knows what we’re doing tomorrow. But I don’t know if he’s finished? Is he finished? We’ll see.’

In an interview on BBC News, he also revealed the one thing that upset him the most about leaving the street.

He confessed: ‘The thing that upset me though was walking away from the people I work with and I don’t just mean the actors.’

‘I’ve known all these people for nearly half my life. I’ve grown up with so many people there but I need a rest and to look to do something different, I’m not getting any younger.’

In scenes from Boxing day, Carla and Peter began rowing as Peter accused his wife of trying to get rid of him.

After a tense and emotional heart-to-heart, Carla persuaded Peter to join his friend Mickey on his yacht, reasoning that they would be better off apart from each other and ending their toxic relationship.

Then came the time for Peter’s emotional farewells with his family but disaster struck when his son Simon (Alex Bain) was nowhere to be found, with Peter forced to run off and catch the tram without getting the chance to say goodbye.

Viewers were left in floods of tears at the scenes, taking to X – formerly Twitter – to share: ‘that’s it, peter gone and that’s the end of peter and carla… i’m so heartbroken i don’t even know what to say #Corrie’;

‘carla’s letting peter go so he can be happy and not have an ending like aidan but peter just wants her to go with him #corrie’;
