James Cleverly has accused Sir Keir Starmer of causing a ‘stench of hypocrisy’ over the freebies row engulfing Downing Street as he insisted he would accept gifts if elected Conservative leader.
The shadow home secretary said that while there were no problems around accepting clothes and free football tickets that were properly declared, there was an issue with the Labour leader ‘attacking us for accepting gifts’.
Mr Cleverly, who addressed Tory members immediately after leadership rival Robert Jenrick, also declared he would abolish the BBC licence fee and revealed his wife berated him for making a joke about a date rate drug at a Downing Street reception.
