Cardinals who will choose the next pope are locked inside the Sistine Chapel where they will elect a new leader of the Catholic Church.
In a ritual dating back to medieval times, 133 cardinal electors are taking part in the papal conclave to choose a successor to Pope Francis following the 88-year-old’s death on Easter Monday.
They are now sequestered from the outside world, their mobile phones surrendered and airwaves around the Vatican jammed to prevent them from all communications until they find a new leader with results from the first vote expected tonight.
