Hundreds of commuters have been forced to evacuate from trains at one of Sydney busiest stations during the afternoon peak hour following a self-harm incident on a packed platform.

Emergency service staff were called to a platform in Central Station at about 4.40pm on Thursday.

The person died at the scene.

Affected routes included the T1 North Shore and Western Line, T2 Leppington and Inner West Line, T3 Liverpool and Inner West Line, T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line, T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line, T8 Airport and South Line and T9 Northern Line.

Commuters have been warned to expect delays and longer travel times.

Stops and platforms may have changed and some services could be less frequent

Passengers have also been urged to listen for announcements and check transport apps before travelling.

A commuter has said they were ‘stuck for an unknown amount of time’ on a train on which an announcer said: ‘We will get through this together’.

Another passenger said trains are not moving at the station and a conductor said people will be ‘stranded for a while’.

‘We’ve been asked to evacuate through the front carriage via a driver’s door,’  she said.
