Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have been happily since 2013, but one of their first dates almost went horribly wrong.
The model and cookbook author who is promoting her new show Chrissy & Dave Eat Out at The Sundance Film Festival, said she was ‘terrified’ her credit card would be declined after she invited him to a fancy dinner in New York.
The couple began seeing each other after meeting on the set of the Grammy winner’s Studio video shoot.
Chrissy 38, told The Hollywood Reporter ‘I took John to Jean-Georges [restaurant] when I was 20 years old, and I remember the margarita that he ordered was $58.’
‘I was just blown away when it came out. It came out on a little dish and had little salts and everything,’ she said describing the high end cocktail.
Chrissy Teigen, 38, revealed she was so worried her card would be declined after she invited future husband John Legend, 45, on a date shortly after they met, that she went to an ATM to get cash to pay for the meal (Pictured in December 2022)
‘My heart broke because I knew then that my card would probably decline.’
To save herself from that kind of embarrassment, the show host went to the bank and withdrew $800.
‘I ended up going to the bank and getting cash because I was so, so scared that it would decline, so I ended up getting out like $800 cash.’
The date was a success, obviously, but the cookbook author said the memory still haunts her.
‘Our meal there was beautiful and wonderful, but the fear that went into having it … oh my God, I’ll never forget that feeling in my entire life. It was terrifying.’

‘The physical time is something, but mentally it’s a lot,’ she explained, breaking down the situation.
‘I have a little girl that’s about to walk. I have a boy that’s just a mush that does nothing,’ she said referring to her youngest Esti and Wren.
‘I have another boy that’s so into sports and a girl that is just absolute perfection in a girl form,’ she said of the energy needed to keep up with Miles and Luna. ‘And to divide your time and your brain space for them is really difficult.’
