A Chinese national has been arrested for attempting to bypass security at Mar-a-Lago to speak with Donald Trump.
Zijie Li, 39, from Los Angeles, was arrested about 5.15pm on Thursday after making multiple attempts over the past five months to get past security.
Li has repeatedly claimed he wanted to speak with Trump.
Just last week on October 30, he was placed under the Baker Act – which allows for a person to be involuntarily held and to receive mental health treatment when they are considered a threat to themselves or others.
He was later released and given a bond which prevented him from going within 500 feet of Trump or Mar-a-Lago.
But just eight days later he tried his luck again, attempting to pass through the Mar-a-Lago checkpoint as a passenger in a rideshare.
For the latest incident, his bond has been set at $100,000. As of Friday morning, he remained in custody at Palm Beach County Jail.
Li first attempted to enter Mar-a-Lago on July 19, days after the assassination attempt on Trump’s life.
He was seen placing paperwork on cars about Trump on July 30, and on July 31 he was arrested for trespassing.
The Chinese national told Secret Service he had key information relating to the assassination attempt that he wanted to pass on to Trump.
The president-elect has been celebrating the outcome of the vote inside the Florida estate, where he waited out the vote count with his family and closest advisors.
Boats from the US Coast Guard are patrolling the waterways near the property, as well as a robotic dog.
The Secret Service announced in a statement to Newsweek that security measures would be ramped up for Trump in the wake of his win on November 5.
While Trump was already receiving increased security protection after surviving two assassination attempts during the campaign, that will ramp up again between now and his inauguration.
Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi told the publication: ‘The President-elect has been receiving heightened Secret Service protection and this level of security will be maintained moving forward.
‘While we cannot share specific details to ensure the integrity of our operations, family members and executive staff of the President-elect may also be afforded protection in accordance with federal law.’
He specifically noted security measures were ramping up in Palm Beach County, Florida, where Mar-a-Lago is located.
‘Enhanced security measures around Palm Beach County, Florida and New York City are also being coordinated. The Secret Service is committed to working with local partners in these cities to keep the community informed about any potential impacts to the public,’ he said.
