The mysterious death of a man who suffered critical injuries during a late-night walk will be probed by police.

The 53-year-old man had been staying at a motel in Dandenong, in Melbourne’s outer southeast, with his partner on the night of Friday, February 28.

The man, who suffered with leg cramps and walked with a distinctive limp, went for a walk at 7pm and then again at 2am, with the last CCTV footage of him being captured at 2.11am.

He never returned to the motel and he was reported missing by his 50-year-old partner.

A passerby found the man with critical head injuries at 6.55am on Saturday morning, March 1.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Victoria Police have asked the public for help piecing together his final movements with anyone with CCTV, dashcam or Ring footage urged to come forward.

Detectives also want to speak to anyone who may have walked past the man around 2am when he set off on his walk.

He was last seen wearing camouflage pants, a grey top, runners, a cap and was carrying a bag.

‘At this point in time investigators have been unable to definitively establish the circumstances which led to this man’s death, not discounting the possibility of a physical assault or some other cause,’ Detective Inspector Rob Nazaretian said.
