Patricia Arquette helped her longtime close friend Liz get a life-changing home makeover on Sunday’s season premiere of Celebrity IOU on HGTV.
‘It’s really a dream come true to be able to give back to her and honor her wishes for how she wants to live her life,’ Patricia, 56, said. ‘To make it as easy and beautiful for her as possible.’
The Oscar-winning actress helped create a more age suitable habitat for her special longtime family friend. She said Liz stepped in and became a surrogate grandmother to her children after her own mother passed away from cancer.
‘That was so beautiful because I was really missing my mom and missing that grandparent-type of wisdom and love that they give,’ Patricia said.
Patricia said Liz was an independent and giving woman and wanted to age in place and she wanted to help her. She told Jonathan and Drew Scott that Liz loves to cook and thought the kitchen didn’t really function for her.

Patricia showed them how drawers in Liz’s kitchen just fell off. She said it would be great for things to be lower and more on Liz’s level.
‘I feel in our culture we don’t really celebrate our elders,’ Patricia said. ‘We don’t make safe spaces for them. This is, I think, just a more beautiful way to provide her with some ease.’
The Property Brothers planned a complete kitchen and laundry redo. Patricia said Liz was staying with friends for three weeks and didn’t know what they were doing.
Patricia took a sledge hammer and started to destroy the cabinets and counters in the kitchen.
‘I love demo,’ Patricia said. ‘I have done some demo before. I think it’s a really great way to get out aggression.’
Jonathan said he saw that her electrical panel was all wrong and Drew said there was an ant infestation in the cabinets.
They called in an exterminator and an electrician for the panel and wiring.
Patricia helped them pick out tile and other color samples for the kitchen. She suggested earthy colors because that was close to Liz’s personality.

‘I feel like you really captured Liz here,’ Patricia said.
Patricia helped Drew do some of the millwork detail for the house.
‘I love to make things myself,’ Patricia said. ‘Obviously it’s easier to just go and buy things off the shelf. But those little touches, I think, make things so much more personal.’
The Brothers brought the height of the cabinets down to be more functional for Liz. They also painted the cabinets burgundy to give the kitchen a special touch. They told her they would also put in floating shelves in the kitchen and would use them to highlight artisanal pieces. Drew contacted a local artist to craft something specific just for Liz.
Patricial helped them decorate and put the finishing touches on the kitchen and tv nook.

‘Honestly the space kind of just blew my mind,’ Patricia said. ‘To do this over three weeks, it’s kind of mind boggling. For all of us who are really fiercely independent people it means a lot to us to be able to stay at home for as long as we can.’
Patricia said she felt this was also a gift from her mom.
‘My mom didn’t get be Liz’s age, you know, and if she had, I would want her life to be as easy as it could be,’ Patricia said.
Patricial thought Liz was going to be completely blown away when she saw the transformation.
‘Oh My God, Patricia,’ Liz said when she saw the space. ‘It’s gorgeous!’

Liz loved all the things they had done for her to make her life easier. Patricia showed her the new spice drawer.
‘That is wonderful,’ Liz said. ‘I love my cabinets.’
Drew showed her how the laundry room was functional for her.
‘It’s going to help me a great deal,’ Liz said. ‘It’s unbelievable.’
Jonathan told her they had fixed her electrical issues too. Jonathan pointed out the custom plates they had made for her.
‘I can do a great deal more with this kitchen than I could have done otherwise,’ Liz said.

Liz cried and Patricia hugged her.
