A car has plunged into a river with the driver still inside, reportedly leaving them seriously injured.

Police were called around 8.40am this morning after a car reportedly plummeted into the River Dart opposite the lifeboat station in Dartmouth.

Emergency services launched a frantic rescue operation on the south Embankment to free the driver, with police, ambulances, fire engines, coastguard and divers deployed.

The driver, who was the only one in the car, was rescued and is believed to be seriously injured, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

The embankment area has been closed and cordons are expected to be in place for much of the day.

After more than three hours at the scene, the emergency services response appears to have been reduced, a bystander told DevonLive.

Members of the public have been asked to avoid the area for now.

‘Next of kin are not known and being sought. Please be mindful of this if at the scene and avoid publishing identifiable factors of vehicle,’ the police statement added.
