At the beginning of 2021, Busy had declared on her podcast that Birde was gay and preferred to use the pronouns they/them.
Now, nearly three years later, the 44-year-old explained to Page Six that her daughter had decided to reverse her decision.
‘The truth is Birdie has decided that her pronouns are she/her,’ Busy informed the outlet Thursday night at the American Museum of Natural History Gala.

At the beginning of 2021, Busy had declared on her podcast that Birde was gay and preferred to use the pronouns they/them
When she first announced that her eldest was gay in January 2021, Busy said Birdie ‘told us at 10 years old’ and ‘obviously I knew that Birdie knew.’
On her podcast Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best, she confessed that ‘I said: “You know Bird, I’ve been doing a bad job with the pronouns,” because Birdie said that they would like their pronouns to be they/them.’
Busy shared that ‘I haven’t been doing it and I’ve said because like I have this public persona and I want Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don’t want to.
‘And then Bird was like: “I don’t give a f***. You can talk about that I’m gay and out. You can talk about my pronouns. That would be cool with me. That’s great.”‘
Busy asked Birdie: ‘”Okay, I’m just, I’ll – I can talk about it on the podcast?” And Birdie was like: “Yeah, talk about it on the podcast, Mom.”‘
The proud mother said: ‘So Birdie, my out kid, prefers they/them. I f*** up sometimes but we’re, I’m trying my best at that too.’
She was co-hosting the podcast with Cassie St. Onge – the showrunner of her short-lived E! talk show Busy Tonight – and Busy Tonight staff-writer Shantira Jackson.
During their episode they also had a discussion about Busy’s suggestion that society ‘just get rid of pronouns entirely. Why, why are we using them?’

Shantira, who identified herself as ‘queer,’ agreed and pointed out the ‘people who, they’re called genderf***s and they wanna go by it.’
Early in the episode Busy divulged that Birdie once told her: ‘I feel like I’m alive but I’m not really living, you know? And I just want the living part to start.’
The proud mother said: ‘And I got really emotional, because I said: “Well, first off, welcome to being my daughter. But I wanna say this to you, because I wish somebody would have said this to me. Like, this is living.
‘”You can’t wait for it to start. You can’t think, when I move to LA and I get that TV show, that will be – then my life will start.’ You can’t think” – that was what I thought, guys, that’s not what she’s thinking,’ she said to a laugh from her co-hosts.
‘”You can’t think like, if only I can get to X, like then I’m gonna start living. If only I can get married or whatever, whatever it is that you have in your head, that that’s gonna be the marker, right? And I really under – I really, really get it, ’cause I always like lived my life waiting for the future, you know?”‘ Busy said, tearing up.

She also advised Birdie that ‘you get to build your life however the f*** you want to, and it doesn’t have to look like anything you’ve ever seen or anything that’s ever been modeled for you, because maybe it doesn’t exist, and you get to choose what will make you feel fulfilled and happy.’
In early 2020, Busy had candidly shared that she nearly left her husband over her feeling she had ‘done it all’ with regards to raising the children.
At that time they managed to make the marriage work by apportioning more responsibilities to him, she told Harper’s Bazaar.
However they did eventually split up in February 2021, although Busy waited until more than a year later to make the development public.
