The Bruce Highway is shut in both directions in southeast Queensland and local residents are in lockdown after shots were fired.
‘Police have made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) due to a shots fired incident on the Bruce Highway in Coles Creek (south of Gympie),’ Queensland Police said.
‘Police were called just after 12.15pm to reports shots were fired towards the Bruce Highway, adjacent to Maher Road.
‘At this time there have been no reports of any injuries.’
An exclusion zone has been established while police respond, encompassing Maher Road and both directions of the Bruce Highway adjacent to Maher Road.
Residents within the exclusion zone are asked to stay indoors and members of the public and motorists should avoid the area.
Long queues have formed while the highway is closed.
Southbound traffic is being diverted at the Traveston turn-off.
