A swimmer has gone missing after being caught in a rip at a popular Sydney beach – sparking a massive search operation.

Emergency services were called to Bronte Beach following reports of a man missing in the surf about 7:45pm on Sunday.

Another person is believed to have also been stuck in the rip but was saved.

A maritime police boat and a NSW Ambulance rescue helicopter were deployed to scour through the rough surf conditions for the man.

Footage from the scene shows the helicopter shining its search light across breaking waves at the bottom of jagged cliffs.
