Billie Eilish has written many songs about love but one thing she has never experienced is being dumped.

The 22-year-old Lunch hitmaker – who recently opened up about being ghosted – is featured on the latest edition of Interview magazine where she had a Q&A with fellow singer Lana Del Rey, 38.

The two touched on several topics including Billie’s latest hit album Hit Me Hard And Soft, their bond, and romantic relationships.

Perhaps the biggest reveal of all, however, is that the Bad Guy singer has never experienced the emotional sting of being broken up with.

Billie said: ‘I really don’t like being—I was going to say out of control, but there’s ways that I do like being out of control. I have a power issue and a control issue, and I also don’t like being vulnerable in a romantic way. It makes me feel uncomfortable, and I don’t know how many times I’ve really been in love.

‘I think there’s different versions of love, and I think that you can be in love and it might not be deep. I’m not going to get too in detail, because I’m going to be rude, but I’ve never been dumped, and also, I’ve never been broken up with. I’ve only done the breaking up.’

Lana insisted to Billie that could mean the fellow star is just running from a relationship.

The What Was I Made For? singer replied: ‘For sure. And I think when people hear that, they’re like, “Oh, all you do is break hearts.” Sure, but that doesn’t mean that people are totally innocent. It means that I was like, “Oh, let me get the f*** out of here.” Or it means things just weren’t right.’

Lana agreed with the fellow musician’s sentiments as she said when she has split with someone it is usually because ‘they made me do that.’

Billie went on to insist that ending a relationship does take quite the mental toll despite never being broken up with.

She explained: ‘Right? That’s what I’m saying. “You did this, b****.” [Laughs] Now some of y’all about to be real mad at me, but I do believe that breaking up with someone versus being broken up with—obviously being broken up with hurts like hell, especially when you don’t see it coming and you wanted a future and it’s taken out of your hands.

‘But honestly, the pain of knowing that you have to end something with somebody that you genuinely love is so horrible.’

Lana reiterated Billie’s point as she said she believes that carrying out the split duties actually sticks with a person longer.

Billie said: ‘I think so, too. And you don’t get to even have the, like, “I got dumped, so f*** you guys. I get to go crazy and have a reaction and be mad at you. And I get to make you into an enemy, because you broke up with me.” You can’t do that. You can’t become a victim.’

Billie has had three public relationships including the most recent one with The Neighbourhood singer, Jesse Rutherford, 32, whom she was first seen with in October 2022 before their split months later on May 17, 2023.

She also dated LA-based actor Matthew Tyler Vorce from 2021 to May 2022 and rapper Brandon Q Adams for less than a year beginning at the end of 2018.

Billie and Lana also touched on her single Lunch – which her fans have referred to as a ‘lesbian anthem’ – just months after opening up about her sexuality.

Billie was asked if she wonders what people are going to say about the song to which she replied: ‘I’m pretty aware of what people will say. It’s so weird to grow up and change in front of the world.

‘The craziest part is discovering things about myself and then suddenly, everyone else knows, and I don’t even have a second to think about how it makes me feel.’

Lana commented on Billie’s latest album as a whole and how the singer has a range of emotions throughout the project but has always kind of maintained a cool and calm demeanor.

Billie replied: ‘Right? It’s interesting to be a person who isn’t an outwardly sensitive complainer. A lot of moments on this album are about situations where I was like, “I’d rather be tortured inside but have somebody think that I’m cool, than have somebody think that I’m hysterical and actually express my feelings.”

‘So many songs on this album reflect that realization of, like, “Maybe I’m obsessed with the idea of nonchalance.”‘

Producer Finneas, who has won 10 Grammys, is the youngest-ever artist to win Producer of the Year, Non-Classical category.

Billie and Finneas are together the youngest artists in history to win two Oscars, taking home the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2022 and 2024 for No Time To Die and What Was I Made For? respectively.
