Model Bella was raised muslim by Jordanian-American father Mohamed Hadid and Dutch-American mother, Yolanda.

Her father Mohamed Hadid, 72, is a Palestinian born in Nazareth in November 1948, four months after his city was captured by Israeli forces.

The family fled to Syria, and ultimately to Washington DC. He has Jordanian and American citizenship.

Bella openly discussed her father’s heritage and how this factored into her upbringing.

‘He was always religious, and he always prayed with us. I am proud to be a Muslim,’ Bella told Porter magazine.

In 2022, the model opened up about her ‘sadness’ at being denied the opportunity to grow up in ‘Muslim culture’ with her Palestinian father, saying she was ‘extracted’ from that side of her family when her mother moved her to California following her parents’ divorce.

She was born in Washington, D.C., where she spent the first four years of her life growing up around relatives from her Palestinian side.

But after her parents split when Bella was four, she and her siblings – Gigi and Anwar – relocated to Santa Barbara, California, with their mother.

Speaking to GQ, the half-Palestinian star explained that she yearned for a chance to explore that side of her history after moving to the West coast.

She said she would have loved to have studied and practiced the religion as a child, but ‘wasn’t given that’ opportunity.

Bella added that was often the only Arab girl in her class at school, which resulted in her being regularly subjected to racist bullying and left her feeling ‘sad and lonely.’

‘I was with my Palestinian side [of the family in D.C.]’, she said. ‘And I got extracted when we moved to California.

‘I would have loved to grow up and be with my dad every day and studying and really being able to practice, just in general being able to live in a Muslim culture, but I wasn’t given that.’

All three Hadid siblings have been open about their pro-Palestinian views and support of the country amid its war with Israel.

The start of Eid ul-Fitr follows the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting undertaken by Muslims from sunrise to sunset each day.

Ramadan, a lunar month, is either 29 or 30 days. It began on the evening of Sunday March 10 in 2024, which means that it will end on either Monday April 8 2024, the 29th day, or the 30th day, Tuesday April 9 2024.

After sunset prayers on Monday April 8, the 29th day of Ramadan, moon sighters will face west to try and catch a first glimpse of the crescent moon.

If the new moon is visible, then the next day will be Eid, if not, Muslims will then fast one more day to complete a 30-day month.

HM Nautical Almanac Office says the moon should easily be visible on Tuesday April 9 and Wednesday April 10.
