Baltimore bridge collapse and port closure send companies scrambling to reroute cargo

The stunning collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge is diverting shipping and trucking around one of the busiest ports on America’s East Coast, creating delays and raising costs in the latest disruption to global supply chains.

Traffic suspension in the area will require rerouting vessels or their cargo to other ports, potentially causing congestion and delays for importers, said Judah Levine, head of research for the global freight booking platform Freightos.

‘Aside from the obvious tragedy, this incident will have significant and long-lasting impacts on the region,’ American Trucking Associations spokesperson Jessica Gail said, calling Key Bridge and Baltimore’s port ‘critical components” of the nation’s infrastructure.

Gail noted that 1.3 million trucks cross the bridge every year – 3,600 a day.

Trucks that carry hazardous materials will now have to make 30 miles of detours around Baltimore because they are prohibited from using the city’s tunnels, she said, adding to delays and increasing fuel costs.

Neal said he uses the bridge several times a day and it serves as a main access point for his community.

‘That could’ve been you. It could’ve been anybody. … All of my friends and their families cross the bridge,’ Neal said.

He said the workers were ‘basically doing some concrete deck repair’, but said they did not know how many vehicles were involved.

Dali container ship that crashed into Baltimore's Key Bridge bringing it crumbling down previously smashed into a dock in Antwerp

The container ship that crashed into Baltimore’s Key Bridge, causing it to collapse, has previously smashed into a dock in Antwerp, Belgium.

In 2016, the ship smashed into the dock in Antwerp, Belgium, as it was leaving the port for German city Bremerhaven during good weather.

The crash happened due to a mistake by the Master and pilot on board the ship, Vessel Finder reports.

The Dali suffered ‘sufficient damages’ in the stern, but remained afloat, while the dock was ‘seriously damaged’ at the time. No people were injured at the time and no oil spill was reported.

The collapsed Key Bridge was struck at what was supposed to be its strongest point, according to a structural engineer

The cargo boat ploughed into what was supposed to be Key Bridge’s strongest structural point – and yet it still completely collapsed on impact – according to an engineer.

‘As I understand it right now, the location where the bridge was struck is unique. In that it is the same location where the bridge has to resist the maximum amount of force as it holds up the center span,’ Ben Schafer, Professor of Civil and Systems Engineering at Johns Hopkins told DailyMail.com.

‘You can understand this visually as the depth of the steel from top arch to bottom support is greatest at these support locations.

‘Almost all bridges from short to long span have some protection for bridge piers in the water to prevent scour and to prevent boat strikes, but it was apparently not enough in this situation.

‘That is my primary observation at this time, beyond still processing the images like everyone else.’

‘First and most important is the safety of anyone we can rescue, and of course the loss of a critical piece of infrastructure for people to live their lives here as they need to in Baltimore and the area,’ Schafer added.

Exclusive: Engineer says extent of the Key Bridge collapse is 'unusual'

An engineer has said that the extent of the Key Bridge collapse is ‘unusual’.

Sean Keyes, CEO of civil and structural engineering firm Sutcliffe, said: ‘Firstly, a container ship of that size should never hit the bridge abutment.

‘However, as the container ship, which typically weighs around 165,000 tons, has hit the steel bridge abutment and steel bridge structure – which is equivalent to being hit by 16,500 heavy goods vehicles – it’s caused the central structure to collapse.

‘What’s unusual, however, is the extent of the collapse, which has been quite substantial, as the unconnected bridge decks should never have collapsed as well.’
