A TikTok star was left red-faced this week after interviewing Hollywood director Baz Luhrmann on the street without knowing who he was.
Georgia Godworth was filming a vox pop on the streets of Newtown in Sydney when she came across a man in a green leather shirt and decided to strike up an impromptu interview with him about dating.
Oblivious to who the renowned director was, the content creator accidentally stumbled into a very exclusive interview with Luhrmann, 61, about his marriage to Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin, 59.
Godworth said she felt humiliated when she uploaded the video to TikTok and discovered she had been speaking with the star, who has directed Hollywood blockbusters Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby.
‘No idea this was Baz Luhrmann,’ she captioned the footage, which began with the famous director hilariously giving the cameraman lighting tips for the interview.
Despite the gaffe, Luhrmann seemed to take it all in his stride and enjoyed the unorthodox interview.
During the chat, he gave an insight into his very unique and private marriage to Martin.

The Great Gatsby director and his wife have been married for 27 years, with the award-winning production designer working on all of Luhrmann’s movies.
‘During that journey of marriage, the person I’m married to and I found our own really genuine and authentic concept of what our contract to each other should be,’ he told Godworth of their unique union.
‘But I think more importantly, marriage is not so much about what exists between you and another person, it’s about advertising to other people that you love and care as to what the deal is.
‘My own general philosophy is, if you care about someone and they’re your friend, but they fall in love with someone else or they like someone, there has to be some degree of acceptance.’

At the end of the interview, Luhrmann told Godworth he usually doesn’t ‘do interviews’ but was ‘happy to be a part’ of hers.
Godworth sarcastically said she was ‘honoured’ to speak with him, though she still had no idea who he was.
Viewers of the video flocked to the comments to criticise Godworth for her complete ignorance as to who she just spoke with.
‘Please tell me you’re joking and you absolutely knew who this was,’ one person asked, to which Godworth replied: ‘I genuinely had no idea.’
Another wrote: ‘I feel like you shouldn’t work in media if you don’t know who Baz Luhrmann is. An insult to this genius.’

‘This is really embarrassing for you. How do you not know him or his legendary wife Catherine Martin,’ a third added.
Yet another said: ‘I usually don’t do interviews and you not even knowing who he was I’m crying.’
While Godworth faced a slew of criticism for the interview, others leaped to her defense with many finding the light-hearted humour in the moment.
‘Tbf you can know who someone is and not recognise them,’ one person wrote.
Another added: ‘I didn’t know what he looked like until now but know who he is! Most of his work is behind the camera and (as he said in this video) he didn’t usually do interviews.’

Someone else pointed out it was ‘hilarious’ to see Luhrmann direct the cameraman on where to stand for the best lighting.
‘There he is telling you where to put the light and camera angle,’ they said.
One user commented: ‘I love how you’re side eyeing him changing the camera angle while he’s just an Oscar Nominated Director.’
