The top 10 most livable suburbs in have been revealed – with a location in our most far-flung state taking out the top spot.

The Livability Census, conducted by data analysts at Place Score, has scored the livability of by its suburbs and states.

Perth’s inner-west suburb of Subiaco was voted the best n suburb to live in by locals who filled in the self-reporting survey.

North Sydney came in seventh and was one of three suburbs across NSW to make the top 10

Subiaco was praised for its connectivity to other areas, amenities, places to eat and shops.

Place Score founder Kylie Legge said the results showed that mixed-density inner-city environments with established landscapes are considered the most livable.

‘New suburbs can’t compete with more than 100 years’ worth of investment and amenity in the older suburbs,’ she said.

The census gathered the responses of more than 50,000 residents across the country to rank their living situation via 50 different attributes.

Each area was then graded against a score of 100 for ‘place experience’, or PX.

New South Wales, Victoria and Western overwhelmingly dominated the list of suburbs with three top-10 entries each.

Meanwhile, South , Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the n Capital Territory failed to make even one appearance.

Noosa Shire, near the Sunshine Coast, scraped in as the tenth best suburb, but Queensland itself was voted the second worst overall state to live in.

Overall, Victoria was the best state to live in, holding a PX score of 70, which tied with the runner-up South .

Queensland scored 66 and came in seventh, followed by the Northern Territory which was last on the list with a score of 63.

Queensland’s poor score was blamed on a rapidly growing population, which is impacting on its infrastructure as it struggles to keep up.

A general trend of the list was that the overall livability of most areas scored slightly less than in 2021, with many suburbs and states losing a point or so.

The census asked participants to rate different qualities of their living arrangement.

These ranged from the amount of open space on offer and the sense of camaraderie and belonging in the neighbourhood itself.

For those over 65 years old, the quality of life was generally better than for younger people.

Boomers reported the highest satisfaction with their livability and 92 per cent reported good levels of mental health.

Those under 25 years of age were among the least impressed with life and only 57 per cent said that they were mentally healthy.

’s top 10 densest areas boasted eight per cent better livability than the nation’s average.

The average livability score nationally was 67 out of 100, which was down by one point compared with the 2021 feedback.

Several suburbs in the list tied in their PX score, which Place Score attributed to the different needs of each community.

‘That is why, in some cases, we may have two or even 10 places with the same livability score – these will be based on very different attributes, as well as different priorities for improvement,’ the group said.
