Heavy rain has lashed an already soaked southeast Queensland as ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily delivers more wet weather to the state’s northwest.
Regions west of Brisbane recorded extraordinary rainfall of more than 300mm within a three-hour period early on Tuesday morning.
Homes have been flooded, entire towns cut off and dozens of schools were forced to close amid warnings up to 200mm of rain is yet to come.
‘Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for areas of southeast Queensland north of about Dalby and Redcliffe, and east of Dalby, Gayndah to Bundaberg. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 80mm to 150mm are likely,’ the BoM said.
Morayfield Shopping Centre, in Brisbane’s north, was flooded on Tuesday morning, with the centre’s lower carpark evacuated due to the rising water.
A significant number of stores in the shopping centre were forced to remain closed with staff unable to commute from areas affected by flooding.

Meanwhile, the main street of Laidley, a town an hour west of Brisbane, was completely submerged.
Warnings have been issued that the rest of the region may experience flooding as water levels continue to rise.
Mayor Tanya Milligan advised residents to anticipate flooding in homes and businesses, and warned the tiny town of Forest Hill was most vulnerable.
An evacuation centre will open on Tuesday at the Laidley State High School for those seeking shelter.
In Jandowae, a small rural town in the Western Downs with a population of just over 1000, residents have been warned to relocate to higher ground.
The town is currently cut off, with no accessible roads due to the surrounding floodwaters
Firefighters rescued 13 people as floodwaters rose in the Moreton Bay, Somerset, Lockyer Valley and Darling Downs regions.
Eight of those rescues were in Moreton Bay alone.
Nearby Samford Valley, 25km north-west of the Brisbane CBD, was one of the worst hit in the region, receiving 300mm of rain in three hours.
Moreton Bay resident Ash’s street was inundated by floodwater.
‘My dad woke me up in a real mad rush and he was yelling at me,’ he told media.
‘I thought, “someone’s in the house”, but no. I came outside and saw a wheelie-bin floating down the road.’

Flood watches have been issued for parts of western Queensland as well as much of central and southeast of the state plus northeast NSW.
The bureau said forecast rainfall in those areas could lead to flash or riverine flooding in the next 48 hours.
‘In the worst case it could lead to inundation of homes, properties, businesses and agricultural land,’ the bureau warned.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily is also ensuring more wet weather in Queensland’s northwest, days after crossing the coast.
This system should move away from the Queensland coast on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning easing the rainfall in the region.
‘We’re expecting persistent showers and storms across northern parts of the country,’ Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Sarah Scully said.
‘It’s ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirilly… that’s continuing to bring heavy rainfall and flooding to central and western parts of Queensland.
‘Kirilly is also drawing a deep layer of tropical moisture across much of Queensland and northern NSW, which is combined with this lingering trough to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms, potentially severe and heavy rainfall as well.’
South of Cloncurry has been one of the worst hit in Queensland’s northwestwith Seymour Gap receiving 256mm in 24 hours, while 244mm fell at Kirby.

Further south at Winton, all rural roads are cut with some properties set to be isolated for six to eight weeks due to floodwaters.
West of Winton towards Boulia, the Middleton community has recorded about 450mm since the weekend.
‘The Boulia road through to Alice Springs has currently got three metres of water over the crossings,’ Winton Mayor Gavin Baskett said.
‘Some of the crossings are at the highest (flood levels) some graziers have ever seen them.’
Winton’s local disaster management group has been activated with some properties preparing for a long period isolated in floodwaters.
‘They are all graziers out there, lucky it isn’t tourist season,’ Mr Baskett said.
The Bureau of Meteorology said the ex-tropical cyclone was expected to linger between Mount Isa and Longreach for the next few days.
Crews are still working to restore electricity for north Queenslanders left without power after Kirrily crossed the coast three days ago.
About 66,000 customers lost power at the peak of the wild weather.
The remaining 1,000 homes still without electricity were expected to be restored by Tuesday night.
Kirrily struck barely a month after Tropical Cyclone Jasper caused record flooding that devastated the far north.
