Shelly Horton has advocated for people born on major public holidays to celebrate their birthday on a different date – even if it means celebrating it months later.

The Talking Married host, 50, explained in her Nine Honey column that several of her friends born on days such as New Year’s Eve or Christmas feel left out, as people are celebrating the day for other reasons.

‘I had a lightbulb moment for another friend of mine, who was born on December 25th. One year he was miserable about his non-birthday,’ she wrote.

‘So I declared, “Enough is enough!” and decided we would celebrate his birthday on June 25th instead. That’s right – a half-year birthday celebration.’

Horton added that by giving people the freedom to reschedule their birthday celebrations, they were able to fully enjoy what should be their most special day.

‘The real joy of a birthday is feeling special, celebrated, and surrounded by people who care about you,’ she wrote.

‘If shifting the date by a few months means you get the birthday you deserve, I’m all for it.’

It comes after Horton shared the shock and heartbreak she felt when her doctor told her she will need to have a hysterectomy.

The presenter requires the surgical procedure, which removes a woman’s uterus, due to severe perimenopausal symptoms and heavy bleeding.

‘I’m shocked at how overwhelmed and teary I feel about it’ she recently wrote in her Nine Honey column.

Horton said that while she has never wanted children, she still felt some ‘grief’ over losing the reproductive organ.

She stressed that ‘a uterus does not define a woman’ and added her story is a ‘call to action for all of us to redefine womanhood beyond biological functions.’

Horton has been open in the past about why she doesn’t want to have children with her husband, and they are perfectly content to be raising a family that includes two dogs instead.

Shelly and her husband Darren Robinson have been together for over a decade and married in 2015.

She says the pair, who have two dogs but do not want children, keep their relationship healthy by never going to bed angry.
