A nursing student has vented her fury about going to the doctor with tonsillitis, only for her concerns to be repeatedly dismissed.
Holly recently posted a TikTok video to recall her visit to a Melbourne GP, describing the ordeal as ‘I’d rather eat warm dog poop then go to a GP as a female.’
Although she already knew she had tonsillitis, Holly claimed the doctor was rude and initially ignored her diagnosis.
‘I go in there and I go, ‘Hi, I think I’ve got tonsillitis, I have pus on my tonsils’,’ she recalled.
He goes, ‘Do you have any symptoms?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, like my throat’s hurting’.
‘He goes, ‘Okay, because people would usually say their symptoms first’.
‘So, immediately I’ve annoyed him.’
Holly brushed off the comment and proceeded with the consultation.
However, the second red flag emerged moments later when the doctor asked to see the inflamed tonsil.
‘I go, ‘Yeah, it’s just on the left side’,’ Holly recalled.
‘He goes, ‘I am a doctor and I will make my own assessment’.
‘I’m just letting you know where the pain is. I’m not sure where the attitude’s come from, maybe your little ego’s hurt.
‘I don’t know why, maybe because I told you where to look. I’m just letting you know where it’s hurting.’
The final straw came when Holly was given a prescription for antibiotics.
‘He gave me a script for five tablets – five antibiotics. What the f*** is five freaking tablets gonna do? Nothing!’ she said.
‘I hate going to the GP. That was so rude, like rude for what? What did I do to offend you seriously?
‘Like, okay, sorry I’m a woman.’
The clip has since attracted almost 700,000 views.
Many viewers shared their own horror experiences of doctors dismissing their concerns.
‘I went to the GP for laryngitis. The doctor told me I had tonsillitis. I said that can’t be right. He said, ‘I know what I’m talking about I’m the doctor’. I said, ‘Well doctor, I had my tonsils removed two years ago’,’ one wrote.
Another added: ‘I told the doctor I had blood in my catheter bag and he asked me if I was sure it wasn’t my period.
A third commented: ‘When I had tonsillitis they asked me if there’s a chance I would be pregnant and encouraged me to do a pregnancy test. How is that even related?’
A fourth wrote: ‘Once I went into see a male doctor because I had a UTI. He sold me I had hayfever.
