The royals have come under scrutiny after the Princess of Wales said she had edited the infamous Mother’s Day family picture taken by Prince William and shared on their social media.
Due to the image being deemed as ‘edited’, it was then ‘killed’ by multiple picture agencies. While many were surprised to see the royals manipulate the image, it is common practice among celebrities to made adjustments to their images with a little digital wizardry.
Among those most infamous for shaving an inch (or several) off various parts of their body, or smoothing out lines and blemishes, are household names like Kim Kardashian.
And Modern Family actor Sofia Vergara is another star who has been accused of retouching images. Even model Kendall Jenner is not immune from accusations of manipulating her physique in photos.
Here, FEMAIL looks at some of the photos accused of digital manipulation…
Sofia Vergara
Bathroom fireplace? The 51-year-old,who boasts 34 million Instagram followers, took a mirror selfie in one of the 11 bathrooms inside her Beverly Hills mansion – but some fans spotted what they claimed was a Photoshop blunder
Some claimed that the fireplace in the bathroom appeared to be slightly bendy, which they said suggested she had manipulated her body which is posed in front of the fireplace
Some fans still labelled the Griselda star as ‘one of the most beautiful women in the world’ and argued that the minor photoshop blunder shouldn’t take away from Vergara’s good looks
The brunette bombshell is no stranger to baring it all on Instagram, and often shares snaps online.
However, this playful denim snap sent eagle-eyed fans into a frenzy for a reason that may not be immediately obvious.
This is because the Griselda star was seen to have a ‘bendy fireplace’ while sporting a pair of the Sofia Vergara jeans, sold at Walmart.
The picture, posted to the photo-sharing app in October last year saw the Colombian-American actress flaunt her derriere as she modelled her line of jeans at the affordable retailer.
It didn’t take long for Vergara’s 34 million Instagram followers to notice that her bathroom fireplace appeared to be bending.
This was considered by some to be the result of a Photoshop blunder – although others ran to the star’s defence.
One said of her ‘bending fireplace’ that: ‘I don’t give a s*** if the picture is photoshopped or not. 1. She’s still one of the most beautiful women in the world, and 2. Her jeans are comfortable as hell! I have several pairs and I love them’.
However, another replied: ‘The point isn’t that she isn’t beautiful, it’s the damage she is doing by photoshopping to give other females a false sense of what’s real and what’s attainable’.
Khloe Kardashian
Fans were quick to point out how the Kardashian’s arm looked disturbingly off, in a sweet birthday tribute to momager Kris Jenner
Khloe Kardashian’s filter use? This tweet called out the reality star for heavily altering selfie after original look is finally revealed on Keeping Up with the Kardashians
CALLED OUT: Fans were quick to discuss the noticeable differences on each of the two pictures
Her body does not look humanly possible, and certainly does not look healthy. Further proof that the photo was touched up is the wall is bent on her left and right
Often considered the most relatable Kardashian sister, Khloe startled the internet a few years ago, when she posted a glamorous snap to Instagram looking barely recognisable.
In 2020, the Kardashian was called out over the image, as the candid original look appeared to emerge in a scene from Keeping Up with the Kardashians, suggesting the reality star had overdosed on filters.
And the reality star came under fire again for similar reasons; ‘the arm’ on a sweet birthday tribute to her mother Kris Jenner, in November 2023, which appeared to have a missing dent.
However, Khloe was quick to clap back, while admitting she was an avid Photoshopper: ‘I saw this ridiculous story of my Photoshopping my forearm lol why would I do that? Ha I love some photoshop but my forearm is good ha’.
And other fans were was more fixated on the manipulation of other features, writing on Instagram: ‘Who cares about the arm?? Why are we not talking about her forehead in the 1st 2 pics??’
In 2022, Khloe denied posting a badly Photoshopped picture of herself, attempting to shift blame on her glam team.
In the photo, the reality star is seen posing in a skintight black catsuit. Her already trim waist appeared even slimmer as many fans questioned if it was even humanly possible.
Her arm was also extremely thin, with her shoulder cut off. In the snap, the wall to the left of her also curved and the gold framed mirror had a wave.
Many fans were quick to slam the star but she insisted the photo had not been posted by a member or her or her team.
She denied that she was the person who posted a badly Photoshopped image of herself.
Kim Kardashian
The SKIMS founder was wearing a figure-hugging baby blue bodysuit with a low-cut scoop neck in the image that sparked fans’ closer look in 2022
‘Wait this is edited,’ one follower wrote, referencing a slight bend in the workout equipment behind Kim in this photo
When Kim, 43, took to Instagram to share a picture of herself at the gym, she did more than make fans envious of her toned physique.
Last year, the reality TV personality shared a snap of herself sporting a blue leotard while working out.
Moments after uploading the image, some fans were quick to call out what they thought could be an editing fail.
They saw a curve in the equipment behind her, which could suggest she had manipulated the shape of her body to look slimmer.
‘Wait this is edited,’ one follower wrote, referencing a slight bend in the metal workout equipment behind her.
Another fan said, ‘The side of the table is bended. I never knew tables could bend’ and someone else added, ‘No not the curvy background,’ with crying laughing emojis.
Kendall Jenner
The photo in question: The model appeared on pal Hailey Bieber’s Instagram stories, showing off her arms and hand in an apparent rebuttal to rumours she had tweaked her bikini photo, which then caused her arm to appear extremely elongated
The Kardashians aren’t the only ones that have been blasted over their Photoshop fails – their half-sisters the Jenners have too been accused of some digital artistry.
Kendall Jenner, 28, is known for her striking figure, but she has faced her fair share of criticism when it comes to filtered photos.
Last year, the model hit back at critics who alleged she edited a recent bikini pic.
When she shared of a photo of herself posing in a risque thong bikini, fans’ eyes were immediately drawn to her comically lanky hands, suggesting she had elongated her whole physique.
One follower pointed out in the comments, ‘Edits gone wrong in the fourth pic,’ while another asked, ‘Babe you’re amazing…but what in the world is going on with your hand in the 4th photo?’
However, the model denied she had edited the image.
Paula Abdul
Paula Abdul, 62, looked like a teenager in a set of heavily photoshopped pictures posted back in 2022 from Kathy Hilton’s holiday party, leading fans to mock her
What a difference! Paula, who looked lovely in a sheer green dress with a starburst pattern of beads over her chest, had eerily smooth and unblemished skin in one photo she shared, which looked different to more recent, candid shots
Paula Abdul was ridiculed on social media in December 2022 after she posted photos to Instagram showing her with an apparently filtered face that made her look decades younger than her real age.
The 62-year-old dancer and singer could have passed for a teenager in the photo showing her posing with Kathy Hilton at the star-studded Christmas party.
Paula, who looked lovely in a sheer green dress with a starburst pattern of beads over her chest, had eerily smooth and unblemished skin in the photo.
A short clip included in the post showed Paula chatting animatedly with Kathy, and the video didn’t appear to have the same smoothing effect, catching the stunner out.
‘Someone stole Paula’s Insta..that’s an entirely different face!’ wrote one user.
‘This looks like a completely different person,’ echoed another.
Amanda Holden
Amanda Holden (pictured) went viral with this holiday picture in 2016, with fans questioning why the horizon looked wonky
Amanda Holden’s holiday picture went viral for all the wrong reasons in 2016.
As the British TV presenter showcased her incredible beach body on Instagram, fans were quick to accuse her of a huge ‘Photoshop fail’.
Looking beyond the star, who was gazing out to sea, the horizon of the ocean either side of her was unusually wonky, suggesting something had been edited.
Adding to the mystery, Amanda abruptly deleted the snap in response to criticism.
Beyonce
In 2014, Beyonce was accused of Photoshopping her birthday bikini pictures after fans notice strange distortions in her Tumblr snaps
Eager eyed fans pointed out a questionable distortion in one image which seems to suggest the singer had tampered with her pictures in order to create the appearance of slimmer thighs
In 2014, Beyonce was accused of Photoshopping her birthday bikini pictures after fans notice strange distortions in her Tumblr snaps.
The singer had wowed fans across the world with her latest uploads, which saw her posing on the private super yacht that she spent her 33rd birthday on.
But eager eyed fans soon pointed out a questionable distortion in one image which seemed to suggest the singer had tampered with her pictures in order to create the appearance of slimmer thighs.
The snap in question saw the star smiling as she strutted down the stairs, proudly showing off her bikini body.
However, the stairs between her thighs tilted up in a diagonal angle which seemed to confirm that the picture has been touched up with an additional tool before being uploaded to her Tumblr page.
Fans flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts as one wrote, ‘Why the hell is Beyonce photoshopping in a thigh gap?’ and another tweeted, ‘Questionable thigh gap there, Bey. #photoshop #wonkystep #beyonce’.
Another added: ‘beyonce needs to chill out forever photoshopping a thigh gap’
One fan was less than impressed as they tweeted: ‘@Beyonce uses photoshop!! Why promote accepting yourself in your videos if you clearly lie about yourself?’.
Chloe Ferry
Chloe Ferry has been accused of photoshopping her pics again after social media users noticed the tiles looked a bit strange behind her
Chloe was also criticised by fans in July 2023 for allegedly photoshopping a picture of herself in a bikini while on holiday in Ibiza
The Geordie Shore star, 28, took to Instagram last year to share some snaps of herself in a skintight blue catsuit in a local cafe in Newcastle for a sponsored post.
Chloe’s outfit hugged every inch of her surgically-enhanced curves with the zip partially undone, teasing a glimpse of her ample assets as she enjoyed a sweet treat.
Despite many fans showering the reality TV star with compliments, others accused her of photoshopping her snaps again after noticing the tiles looked a little strange behind her.
One person questioned: ‘Is that some crazy wavey floor tiles?’ Another added: ‘Girl if you’re going to photoshop your pictures, stop standing on or in front of lined backgrounds lol’.
Before that, Chloe had been caught out earlier last summer while holidaying in Ibiza.
The star was criticised by fans after she uploaded a picture of herself looking sensational in a barely-there white bikini top and matching bottoms with high- waisted string straps.
Chloe posed for the snap alongside Wayne Lineker, 61, at his O Beach Club on the Balearic island.
However all wasn’t what is seemed as eagle-eyed fans noticed the picture appeared to have been altered as the wood in the background behind Chloe looked bent.
Taking to the comments section, one person wrote: ‘First rule of photoshop… don’t stand next to straight lines.’ Another person added: ‘Is it me or is that wood bent.’
Johnny Depp
The initial post (above) featured a digitally altered image of the two stars, prompting fans to label it as a Photoshop fail
The snap used by Depp turned out to be a manipulated version of a 1988 picture (above) featuring Downey with his then-girlfriend, Sarah Jessica Parker, with Depp absent altogether from the original photo
The damage had already been done, as one Twitter fan shared the fake pic and the original with the hilarious caption, ‘Damn Kate Middleton should’ve hired Johnny Depp to do the photoshop’
Johnny Depp swiftly celebrated Robert Downey Jr.’s Oscars win on social media but had to retract an image that was later revealed to be photoshopped.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 60, took to his Instagram Stories on Sunday to extend congratulations to his longtime friend, celebrating his victory as Best Supporting Actor for his remarkable performance in Oppenheimer.
However, the initial post featured a digitally altered image of the two stars, prompting fans to label it as a Photoshop fail.
The snap used by Depp turned out to be a manipulated version of a 1988 picture featuring Downey with his then-girlfriend, Sarah Jessica Parker, with Depp absent altogether from the original photo.
Depp promptly substituted the image with an authentic photograph of him and Downey at the Golden Globes in 2011, adding the caption: ‘Let’s try this again…congrats to my dear friend.’
The Spanish Royal Family
The Spanish Royal Family released this photo in December 2005 – but a spokesperson was later forced to admit it was edited after fans noticed King Juan Carlos was missing a leg
A Christmas card released by the Spanish Royal Family has resurfaced online and left fans in hysterics thanks its poor Photoshopping.
The image, which was taken in 2005, has re-emerged after the Princess of Wales admitted to editing her Mother’s Day post.
In the family portrait, King Juan Carlos – who abdicated in June 2014 – is seen sitting on a red sofa next to his wife Queen Sofia, who is holding their baby granddaughter Princess Leonor.
In front of the sofa, the royal couple’s other grandchildren – Felipe, Victoria Eugenia, Miguel, Juan, Irene and Pablo – are seen sitting on green velvet cushion.
However, royal watchers at the time noticed that King Juan Carlos’ leg had been edited out the photo.
This prompted a Palace spokesperson to admit that photo editing software had been used to create the image.
After struggling to get all the grandchildren together in a room, the Palace superimposed photos of the royals onto the same background for the sake of the Christmas card.
A spokesperson said: ‘It is not a photograph of an official event – it is merely a compilation used as a Christmas greeting.’
Kate Middleton and family
The picture-perfect image of a smiling Kate, 42, surrounded by her three children was supposed to put an end to vicious conspiracy theories swirling online about her condition after she took time away from public life to recover from abdominal surgery. But some news agencies have pulled the photo due to concerns it had been ‘manipulated’
Kate’s zip appears to be misaligned on the photo as the top of it is further left and appears significantly lighter than the rest of the zip
The corner of Charlotte’s skirt was pointed out as another ‘editing error’ by social media sleuths
It is not the first time the Wales’ photos have come under the spotlight. In December 2023, the family’s Christmas portrait was hit with criticism from around the world as some said Louis appeared to be missing a finger
People on social media began raising questions about the family portrait with some pointing to what appeared to be extra legs with others saying Louis was missing a finger
In mid-December 2023, Prince William, 41, and Kate, 42, released a casual family picture with their three young children in matching white shirts which were on the front of their festive card for that year.
The monochrome image shows the royal couple smiling alongside their sons Prince George, 10, Prince Louis, five, and Princess Charlotte, eight, who is seated in a chair at the front of the group, with Louis’ hand resting on the arm.
But in a suspected editing fail, some believe Louis seems to be missing the middle finger on his left hand.
Now, social media users have noticed the error, some have suggested more inconsistencies.
This came just months before Princess Kate’s most recent brush with photoshop allegations.
