A New Jersey animal shelter is giving brokenhearted individuals a reason to smile this Valentine’s Day.
Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center announced in an Instagram post they would be offering scorned lovers a chance to name a feral cat after their ex, and have them spayed or neutered for only $50.
The Blackwood adoption center described in their post description that the event is part of their trap-neuter-return (TNR) program.
Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in Blackwood, New Jersey announced the special Valentine’s Day promotion in an Instagram post last week
For only $50, individuals are able to name a cat that is part of the rap-neuter-return (TNR) program after their ex, and have them be spayed or neutered
The idea was first thought of by one of the shelter volunteers. The shelter originally thought about doing ‘a petagram’ as their promotion
‘Your donation ensures we can offer spay/neuter surgery at a reduced cost for community cats and their caregivers in need.’
The organization noted in their announcement that full names will not be used and that they would only be using first names and nicknames of the unforgiving exes.
The Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center is a non-profit organization originally founded as Animal Welfare Society of Camden County.
The shelter’s director of development Eric Schwartz and other board members at the shelter were discussing holiday events when the Neuter Your Ex for Valentine’s Day idea was brought up.
‘One of our board members mentioned that a volunteer named Darcy had a bit of a unique idea for a Valentine’s Day fundraiser,’ he said.
The idea, which impressed board members, also came with a fun tagline: Because something shouldn’t breed.
‘The tagline ‘because something shouldn’t breed’ really caught our attention and we decided to put some marketing materials around it and see how people responded,’ Schwartz stated.
The shelter has received calls and donations for about 50 different name suggestions and recently posted a video that showed of five spayed or neutered cats that are members of the TNR program.

TNR is a program at the shelter that is being supported by a grant, and provides things like spy/neuters, feline distempers, and a one year rabies vaccine to cats living outdoors.
These felines include strays and community cats – animals that have never lived with a human family.
According to Schwartz, the shelter neutered 600 cats through the TNR program, and this years funds will ‘go a long way’ to cover this years procedure costs.
‘We originally set a goal of raising $1,000 and so far we have surpassed $10,000 on more than 200 donations,’ Schwartz stated.
Several Instagram users have wrote in the comments that they’ve donated, while others have been asking questions about the campaign.
Many social media users have been asking if they can see the cats. The animal shelter recently posted a video two days ago of five cats that have so far been named and spayed or neutered
A few people are wondering how the campaign itself works, and one even asked if she could put the name of her ‘husband’s ex mistress.’
The shelter has been responding to several questions and confirming that they will be sharing some of the cats that are named and spayed or neutered.
‘Some of our cats will be featured on our social media,’ the shelter wrote.
‘If you want a photo, please email the contact in our post and they will do their best to try and get you one.’
