Andrew Garfield is finally breaking his silence about longtime rumors that the beloved 2016 musical La La Land is about his real relationship with Emma Stone.
Garfield, 41, and Stone, 35, first started dating in 2011 when they were filming The Amazing Spider-Man, where he played Spider-Man and she played Gwen Stacy.
The actor – who recently opened up about starring in an erotic thriller – rarely spoke about his relationship with Stone, though they reportedly split in 2015, though neither publicly addressed the split.
Stone would ultimately go on to marry Saturday Night Live director Dave McCary, and they welcome daughter Louise Jean in March 2021.
Garfield – promoting his new film We Live In Time with Florence Pugh – addressed the La La Land rumors for the first time in an interview with Esquire.

The actor is currently dating 43-year-old Kate Thomas, a self-proclaimed ‘professional witch.’
They were first spotted together in March 2024, on a double date with Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham in Malibu.
She recently opened up about how the relationship with Garfield has brought about online hate about her looks.
‘F***ing hell, nothing could prepare me for having literally thousands of women telling me I’m ugly, I’m unattractive, I’m less than in every conceivable way,’ she said.
She added that the furore over her relationship with the heartthrob had even led to accusations of witchcraft.
‘It’s frustrating that no matter how accomplished or impactful a woman is, it’s always going to be more interesting if they are in a relationship with a man.’

As for La La Land, director Damien Chazelle originally came up with the concept for his Harvard thesis with his classmate and composer Justin Hurwitz.
Chazelle revealed in a 2016 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the story isn’t based on anyone in real life.
‘The movie is not based on anything. There is something very poetic about a city that is built by people with these unrealistic dreams, and they just put it all on the line for that,’ he said.
Despite splitting nearly a decade ago, Garfield and Stone remain friendly, with the actor teasing during a 2022 Happy Sad Confused podcast appearance that he had to lie to her about his surprise appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, adding that when she finally saw the movie she texted him, ‘You’re a jerk!’
