Wrexham have confirmed midfielder Elliot Lee has been taken to hospital following a car crash after their match against Bolton on Tuesday night.

‘Wrexham AFC can confirm that last night, after the Vertu Trophy match against Bolton Wanderers, a first-team player (Elliot Lee) was involved in a road traffic incident when returning home,’ a statement read.

‘The incident involved one other car and resulted in the drivers of both cars being taken to hospital. Emergency services were quickly on the scene and the Club would like to thank them for their prompt response and action.

‘The player suffered no major injuries, while the driver of the other vehicle is being treated for their injuries.

‘The Club will be making no further comment at this stage.’

Lee had featured in Wrexham’s 1-0 victory over Bolton in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday night.

The midfielder had played 63 minutes of the tie before being brought off for substitute Ollie Rathbone.

Lee, the son of former England and Newcastle United midfielder Rob, has been key player for Wrexham since joining the club in 2022.

The 30-year-old has been part of their back-to-back promotion winning teams, which has seen the club rise from the National League to League One.

Lee has played 134 matches for the Welsh side, which is backed by the Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, scoring 38 goals.

The midfielder has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists.

Wrexham are currently pursuing a third consecutive promotion with Phil Parkinson’s side third in League One.

The Red Dragons are four points adrift of second placed Wycombe, who occupy the second automatic promotion spot.

Wrexham earned a 1-0 victory over Bolton on Tuesday night at the Racecourse Ground, with Andy Cannon’s goal earning them a place in the EFL Trophy semi-finals. They will host Peterborough United in the last four on February 24.

The incident comes just weeks after fellow Wrexham star James McClean crashed his Audi on route to training.

The Irishman went off road near to Wrexham Golf Club on January 22, with eyewitnesses reporting significant damage to the footballer’s black Audi.

Fog and ice presented treacherous conditions in North Wales and one source close to the scene described ‘lots of tyre marks’ on the roundabout heading into Wrexham.

McClean’s Audi was towed away from the scene with witnesses describing a smashed windscreen and significant damage to the car.

He was fit to start and captain Wrexham in their League One match against Birmingham City the following day.

Following the match, McClean took to Instagram to reveal the full extent of the damage to his vehicle and address the scary episode.

‘Now that the game’s out of the way, to address yesterday,’ he wrote. ‘An experience I never wish to encounter again, I am blessed and thankful I managed to walk away with minor injuries and return home to my family.

‘Though much to the disappointment of some smelly scruffy pathetic creatures that messaged my wife online, thank you for the messages of support.’
