A drug dealer refused to give police his mobile phone pin code so instead they unlocked it by pointing it at his face.

Grant Lester, 37, was convicted after police used facial recognition technology to unlock the device which then provided evidence he had been dealing drugs.

The father-of-one had been seen driving his vehicle in ‘a suspicious manner’ and appeared to be trying to evade police.

When officers tracked him down in Glais, the force found cocaine and diazepam underneath his seat, alongside his mobile phone.

A court heard Lester claimed he could not remember his phone pin when officers requested it.

However, he later revealed the PIN because he wanted his partner to be told he had been arrested.

Swansea Crown Court heard he answered ‘no comment’ when interviewed but said the diazepam was for his own use to treat anxiety.

Prosecutor Regan Walters said messages on the phone showed Lester’s drug dealing history.

Lester, of Clydach, pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to supply, and the simple possession of a Class C drug.

John Allchurch, defending, said Lester suffered ‘significant mental health issues’ and was concerened on the impact of prison on his young daughter.

But Judge Paul Thomas KC sentenced him to three years and two months in prison for Possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

Sergeant Luke Tucker said: ‘Grant Lester knew that his involvement in the illegal drug trade was wrong, and attempted to conceal this from officers when caught by hiding drugs and his mobile phone under his seat.

‘Like others involved in this illegal activity, he was only concerned with his own financial profit, and not at all for the misery these drugs inflict upon the local community.

‘We hope that Grant will think about his actions whilst in prison and will change his ways.’
