The father of a young man who was shot dead confronted his son’s killer in court, calling him the ‘scum of the earth’ and ‘the sociopath sitting in the room with us.’

In April 2023, Ryan Healey, 25, was killed in a random drive-by shooting in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Anjuan Marion was arrested as the suspect in the Healey’s killing in November 2023 and since he was only 16 at the time, he was initially charged as a juvenile. His case has since been moved to adult court.

Healey’s father, Rob Healey, spoke at the Friday sentencing hearing for Marion, now 18, after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and a gun charge for a separate shooting.

The killer, now 18, was sentenced to 12 to 14-and-a-half years in prison by Judge Chris Wagner.

Rob told the court that no prison term would be long enough for Marion, who he hopes ‘lives in pain and suffering for the rest of his life,’ the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

He called Marion ‘a pathetic excuse for a human being’ and asked him, ‘are you the one in charge of deciding life or death when you’re wielding a firearm?’

Several other family members gave statements to the court, while Marion sat in the jury box with his hands shackled behind his back.

Healey’s brother Ronald said the killing ‘has left a devastating void, especially for our mother.’

Ronald said their mother has crippling depression that stops her from going outside. She now spends her time ‘imprisoned in her own home (with) fear and anxiety,’ he said.

He added that Healey ‘was a true rock for me and our family … the embodiment of kindness and generosity.’

Police found Healey’s body at East Liberty and Main streets near Rothenberg Preparatory Academy, which isn’t far from where Healey was living. Police said he was shot multiple times in the chest.

Grace Garber, Healey’s partner at the time, told Judge Wagner that an unidentified person stole his wallet as he lay bleeding on the pavement.

It’s unclear if this person was affiliated with Marion. The motive for killing Healey remains unknown and Marion didn’t take the opportunity to explain.

‘I want to say I’m sorry,’ was the only statement he made in court about the shooting.

Marion was a student at Taft High School at the time of the shooting, his attorney Timothy Bicknell said at the hearing.

He also has a 4-year-old daughter and is reportedly taking classes to get his high school diploma.

In December, Marion was expected to plead guilt to the charges against him, but Judge Wagner initially didn’t accept the plea deal.

Marion was scheduled to go on trial in July 2025 before the plea deal put forward by prosecutors was agreed to by the judge.

Wagner said Friday that he ‘did not care for’ the sentence part of the agreement but ultimately chose to accept it.
