A woman says she was banned from Tesco after refusing to use self checkout machines.

Sue Crossley, 67, said she was banned after asking staff to serve her on a traditional till at a Tesco Express on Jubilee Street, Brighton.

Ms Crossley, from Hove, said she has difficulties with the self service checkouts and prefers tills with staff.

‘I do not like self checkouts,’ she said.

‘Sometimes I want to pay with cash and they all take card.’

She said Tesco banned her after a confrontation with staff.

Ms Crossley said staff were ‘unwilling’ to serve her on manned checkouts and claimed staff were resistant when she asked them to serve her.

She said: ‘It has happened to me lots of times.

‘They say they’re friendly and helpful and they will help you with the manned till.

‘When I asked someone to come and serve me, they were throwing goods and boxes about.

‘They were so rude to me; I was not particularly nice to them.

‘It was all an escalation of asking to use the manned till.’

Ms Crossley said she was banned from the store two years ago following the incident but is still standing strong in her defiance of self checkouts.

She is still a regular visitor to the Tesco Express near her favourite public library in Brighton.

She added: ‘I still go in there but I sneak round.

Tesco was unable to look into the claims made by Sue, although stated that any abusive, violent or threatening behaviour is unacceptable.’
