A five-year-old boy has been left with a punctured lung and bruised liver after he fell from a window in Miami.
Dontavis J. Ponder was with his grandmother watching TV at their apartment in a building at 1245 Northwest Street.
According to Aunt Geleen Gonzalez, the child was in another room when he fell down.
‘I guess he wanted to look out the window to see what was going on or whatnot, I don’t know, and I guess he pushed himself a little too far into the screen of the window and it probably popped out and that’s at the same time he fell out,’ Gonzalez told NBC.
Ponder was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center in a critical condition for treatment by responding fire officials.
While he did not break any bones, he remains intubated and sedated in an ICU at the Center.
Ponder’s grandmother later noted that she did not hear the fall and had no idea what happened, Gonzalez revealed.
‘She didn’t know what was going on until she heard the sirens of the rescue ambulance and the police,’ the aunt said.
Despite the severity of the situation, the toddler’s family remains grateful his injuries are not worse.
This comes less than a year after a toddler has tragically died after falling from a hotel window in South Dakota.
Madden Hein, 1, fell from a third floor window at the Club House Hotel & Suites in Sioux Falls on April 13 at about 9am, according to police.
The boy, from Minnesota, was staying at the hotel with his parents and was taken to a local hospital after the fall.
Kathryn Hein, the boy’s devastated mother, announced on Tuesday that her ‘sweet boy’ had died and shared on Facebook a picture of her and her husband Alex holding his little hand in the hospital.
‘It is with heavy hearts to say that our sweet baby boy Madden gained his angel wings late on April 15th,’ she wrote.
‘We miss him so much and we are having a hard time processing this all.’
The Sioux Falls Police Department told DailyMail.com that the incident is under investigation and is currently being looked at as a ‘tragic accident.’
Kathryn said that her little boy is a ‘real life superhero’ as she announced that his organs will be donated to help others.
His mother said the family plans to participate in an ‘honor walk’ with Madden to his organ donation surgery.
According to the donation page, Madden is survived by his two parents and his three-year-old sister.
