Paul Gascoigne has made a hilarious surprise appearance in Rangers Football Club’s Christmas advert.

The legendary midfielder – also nicknamed affectionately as Gazza – played for the Scottish team in the 1990s.

While playing for Rangers, he helped the club to two league titles, a Scottish Cup and a Scottish League Cup.

The 56-year-old has now made a sensational comeback for the 2023 festive season – although he was left grim-faced when forced to do the washing up after Christmas dinner.

The ad kicked off beside a Christmas tree decorated with the club’s signature blue colours.

Current players for the team – including the captain James Tavernier and goalie Jack Butland – are seen plating up and enjoying Christmas dinner.

Other former club legends also made a return including Kenny Miller, John Brown and Barry Ferguson are also seen tucking into the feast.

However – as they pulled crackers and ate their turkey, one chair remained empty.

One last figure walked into the room, hidden behind a giant pile of presents.

Slowly they were pulled away to reveal none other than Gazza himself, brandishing a cheeky grin as his teammates let out a roaring cheer.

However one final twist remained – as after the stars had enjoyed their meal, it was Gazza who was gifted the task of washing up.

Fans were elated at the legend’s return, with one taking to social media to say: ‘No joke, that actually was a lovely surprise, definitely made me smile,’ while another added: ‘Great to see Gazza looking well.’

A third said: ‘Dunno about everyone else but seeing Gazza just topped the video for me.’

Gazza famously publicly battled mental health problems and alcohol addiction following his years on the football pitch.

The England legend even paid £20,000 to have anti-boozing pellets puts into his stomach in a bid to stop drinking.

Paul, who made 57 appearances for his country, has been in rehab seven times and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in 2008 and 2014.

Earlier this year he made a foray into reality television, appearing on Channel 4’s Scared Of The Dark.

In January 2020, Paul appeared on This Morning where he told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: ‘I had a relapse at Christmas, which I was gutted [about], but I’ve just got back on the straight and narrow again.’

The same month, he told The Mirror: ‘I’ve been to , and spent £20,000 including all the travel, to get an operation that stops me drinking.

‘You get pellets in your stomach and it makes you feel sick if you have too much.

‘It means you can have a beer or a glass of wine and socialise, but you cannot have any more.’
