Alert – Claudia Karvan hints at what fans can expect from Bump’s grand finale as she teases it has been a long time coming

Claudia Karvan has hinted at what fans can expect from Bump’s long-awaited season finale.

The fan-favourite Stan series is coming to an end with its fifth and final series at the end of the year, and fans are eagerly waiting to see what’s in store.

The comedy-drama centres around Oly (Nathalie Morris) and her boyfriend Santi (Carlos Sanson Jr), who had a surprise baby in season one while still in school.

The final season will see Oly’s mother Angie (Claudia) continue to battle cancer while Oly comes to terms with her second pregnancy.

Now, co-creator Claudia, 52, has hinted at what will happen at the end of the show as she teased that they had already decided on the ending way back in season one.

‘The ending that we have – the image and the moment – was actually on our wish list when we were developing series one,’ she exclusively told Daily Mail .

‘We were like ”wouldn’t it be great if we could one day end the series on this moment?” and that’s what we’ve done.’

‘The great thing about series five was we went into it knowing exactly how we were going to end it,’ she continued.

‘So it was just about how we were going to hold the hand of the audience and lead them to this point.’

Hinting at the drama to come, Claudia said they tackle serious themes including mortality and pregnancy as it proves to be just as emotional of a series as ever.

‘We tackle pretty significant storylines in the same sort of Bump tone, so it is still warm, life-affirming and funny, but hard-hitting,’ she went on.

‘We tackle mortality, the politics of pregnancy and labour, feminism, environmentalism, abortion – yeah.

‘We sugarcoat stuff, but we definitely go there, which is the fun of it, we don’t want to be too safe.’

Addressing where the inspiration for the storylines come from, Claudia revealed that she and co-creator Kelsey Munro inject a lot of their own experiences into the scripts, as do the rest of the cast.

‘There’s a lot of autobiographical stuff from Kelsey and all the writers in the room – even the actors pitch their own storylines and often they’re great,’ she shared.

‘The story room is everyone bringing in their diaries or people telling their friends stories and secrets to put them in the show!’

Nathalie Morris, who plays Oly, even co-wrote one of the episodes, with Claudia saying she was thrilled to help the budding star’s writing dreams come true.

Of the candid real-life feel that encapsulates Bump, Claudia told how important it was for them to accurately represent n society and the diversity that comes with that.

‘If you are making television in , which is very generously subsidized by taxpayers, you have to reflect on what our society looks like,’ she shared.

‘When we met Ioane [Saula], who is Samoan, we took his lead on representation of his community and he’s really well aware of that.

‘After series one, he said to me ”you don’t know what you’ve done for me, this is really huge”. 

‘At one point he was like ”so in the future [on the show] I’ll be a labourer or a doorman at a nightclub” and we were like ”no, you’re going to be a midwife”.

‘He was like ”what? When has that ever happened on television?”’

Claudia also credited Bump’s global success with its ‘authentic’ feel as she shared her pride that the show has debuted to huge success over in the United Kingdom. 

‘It’s very rare for an n show to cut through overseas, like Colin From Accounts has and Fisk has and Home and Away and Neighbours have, but it is rare,’ she gushed.

‘So when I get the regular DMs from audiences in England, I have to pinch myself and I think it comes down to how specific and authentic the show is.’

The fifth and final series of Bump is coming to screen on Boxing Day in what Stan described as a ‘Christmas tradition for all n households’.

The final instalment of Bump promises to be one dramatic and bittersweet swansong for the Chalmers-Davis family.

The comedy-drama was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows on Stan upon its debut in 2021 and spawned a spin-off series titled Year Of in 2023. 

The brand new season of the Stan Original Series Bump will premiere on Boxing Day, all episodes at once. Every episode of Seasons 1, 2, 3 and 4 are now streaming, only on Stan.
