Generation Z are turning their back on the traditional Christmas dinner in favour of fried chicken, pizza and cheesecake, a study claims.

Some 78 per cent of people aged 18 to 27 want a change from classic festive food.

Researchers also found 67 per cent believe it is important their Yuletide meal is trendy enough to impress Instagram users.

Christmas pudding is firmly in their firing line – with 64 per cent eager to ditch the dessert they believe is ‘dated’, a poll for supermarket Aldi found.

Around 54 per cent said the big Christmas feast needs a modern makeover to stay relevant.

Three in ten are ready to replace traditional turkey with crispy fried chicken and 24 per cent with pizza.

Cheesecake (33 per cent), chocolate gateau (29 per cent) and ice cream (25 per cent) are preferred to Christmas pudding.

But 61 per cent of Gen Z say they expect their parents to dish up the traditional pudding whether they like it or not.

Mince pies and mulled wine are each disliked by 29 per cent, Christmas cake by 27 per cent, cranberry sauce by 24 per cent and sprouts by 21 per cent.

Aldi UK’s Julie Ashfield said: ‘We’re aware tastes are evolving.

‘We’re launching a Christmas Pudding Exchange Service to help customers end their meal with a dessert they love.’

Yet Aldi still expects to sell 2.3 million Christmas puddings this year.
