A large fire has erupted from the roof of a midtown Manhattan skyscraper, filling the skies over New York City with thick smoke.

The blaze was spotted from the roof of The Set, a luxury apartment building in the Hudson Yards neighborhood.

Fire crews raced to the scene, on 10th Avenue and West 35th Street, after the fire started shortly before midday on Thursday.

There are no early reports of injuries or deaths, and FDNY said the fire is believed to have started in a mechanical room on top of the skyscraper.

The FDNY said around 80 firefighters responded to the large fire.

Social media was quickly flooded with concerned New Yorkers sharing images of the inferno filling up the Big Apple skyline.

Some shared images from across the Hudson River in New Jersey, showing a thick plume of smoke drifting over the water.

The rooftop terrace of The Set, where the fire appears to be emanating from, features luxury amenities including a swimming pool, terrace, lounge space and dining.

Situated in Hudson Yards, known for hosting some of the most exclusive and expensive housing in Manhattan, rent prices at The Set begin at almost $7,000-a-month for one-bedroom apartments.

A spokesperson for the building said in a statement: ‘We are grateful to the FDNY and NYPD for their swift containment of the incident and that no one was injured.

‘The FDNY has since called an ‘all clear,’ residents have returned to their homes, and neighboring streets have reopened.’
