A man out for a walk along a suburban Melbourne footpath has died after being struck by a car.

Emergency services were called to Dalton Rd at Epping in the city’s north about 10am on Saturday following reports a car had mounted a footpath and struck a pedestrian.

Victoria Police confirmed the 63-year-old man from Mill Park died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

After he was struck, the male driver then continued along the footpath, before crashing into a pole and a building.

The 27-year-old driver from Glenroy sustained serious injuries to his lower body.

He was freed from the wreck by firefighters and was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition under police guard.

He is yet to be questioned and no charges have been laid.

Pictures show the extensive damage to the silver hatchback including the bonnet and windscreen completely smashed.

Police are investigating what caused the crash that left a man dead and another in hospital

The car went through a pedestrian barrier as it mounted the kerb before hitting a man out for a walk

It is understood the car had gone through a pedestrian crossing barrier as it mounted the kerb.

Witnesses said the 27-year-old was seen ‘slumped over the steering wheel’ at a different intersection before the crash and had to be woken by witnesses who tapped on the window, reported The Age.

He then allegedly ‘drove off at speed’ and crashed shortly after.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the collision, with inquiries ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has any information or who has footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
