The tradition of trick-or-treating has its origins in a variety of European and Celtic customs, which included Souling, a medieval English tradition where people would go door-to-door on All Saint’s Day to offer a song or prayer in exchange for food, typically a soul cake.

The Scottish and Irish tradition of guising is when people would go door-to-door in costume and perform a short act to receive food or treats.

The Celtic pagan holiday called Samhain  comes from when people would dress up and have bonfires to scare away gods who might try to trick them.

Irish, Scottish, and English immigrants brought these traditions to the United States, but trick-or-treating didn’t become popular until the 1950s.
