Sex and The City fans went wild this week over a tantalizing online theory about which political party the four main characters would vote for.

The iconic drama – which ran on TV for six seasons between 1998-2004 and then two movies, followed the New York City sexcapades and dramas of best friends Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon).

While the series occasionally dabbled in politics – Carrie memorably dated city councilman Bill Kelley (John Slattery) in season three episode Politically Erect while then-future president Donald Trump made a cameo in season 2’s The Man, the Myth, the Viagra – the quartet’s voting preferences were never revealed.

Now an X user has put forward their theory about who each of the characters would vote for – sparking fierce online debate centered around PR maneater Samantha.

The thread reads: ‘Carrie never voted until Big told her she had to vote for Bush in 2000. Essentially apolitical. Her politics are “man”.

It became viral just as actress Sarah Jessica Parker revealed who she will be voting for in the 2024 Presidential US Election.

The thread continued: ‘Charlotte York: lifelong registered Republican. Doesn’t tell the other girls. Has a whole other set of WASPy ladies who lunch friends who share her views. Donates generously.

‘Miranda Hobbs: straight Democrat. Attends feminist readings. Spiritually lesbian. Arrested once while at Columbia for protesting.

‘Samantha Jones: she’s in her bag. Largely votes republican but as the most Trump coded of the girls donates to both parties and makes sure she’s seen with notable figures from both sides.’

‘Mr. Big is actually literally friends with Trump. They hung out at the same clubs in the 80s.

Of Miranda’s on-off love Steve Brady, they write: ‘Too r******d to have his own opinions does what Miranda tells him.

And of Samantha’s actor love Smith Jerrod they quipped: ‘D**k too big to care about politics.’

Carrie’s ex fiance Aidan Shaw voted ‘Whatever the 90s equivalent of a Bernie bro is, probably went Nader’ while Mr Big’s ex-wife Natasha was theorized to be an ‘Ice cold Republican. Zero qualms.’

Fans rushed to social media to shoot down Samantha being a Republican due to her strong belief in women’s rights.

One wrote: ‘Steve and Samantha are democrats. Samantha would be voting for women’s rights. There’s no way she’d be a republican.

Others wrote: ‘Samantha Jones would never be a republican. Like what show were they watching? If anyone would vote Republican it would have been Charlotte. Maybe not now but when she was with Trey not getting laid? Definitely.

‘Anyone who thinks Samantha would be a Republican clearly didn’t understand the character. Charlotte. Charlotte could have been a Republican.

‘Nope. She is way too much of a strong, independent woman to vote republican.

‘If people think Samantha was republican they never watched the show.

‘Samantha would not be down with anyone taking away women’s reproductive rights. I don’t believe any of them would be Republican, honestly (Charlotte maybe when she was with Trey but not since she struggled w fertility).

‘no way, Sam and Miranda are Democrats. Charlotte’s GOP and Carrie might secretly vote Republican.

‘None of the girls would be Republican even conservative Charlotte. Im just sure Carrie never votes.’

Others speculated: ‘Carrie is a dem. She made snarky comments about Giuliani on the show and dated a Democratic politico that time.

‘Charlotte is the most likely to be a Republican but would never vote for Trump.’

‘SJ is in no way Trump coded. She’s self-made and successful. Sex positive ≠ sex offender. SJ’s getting Met Gala invites. If SJ ever had a GOP affiliation, it would have been Republican Bloomberg. And Charlotte left the GOP when Trey couldn’t “stand up.’

Earlier this year, Sarah also briefly talked about what fans can expect from the third season and her character Carrie Bradshaw.

She explained while on the Today show that season three has a ‘soufflé quality’ and added, ‘It just feels really lovely.’

‘So, there will be layers and complexity and complications as there always are – certainly in Carrie’s life.’
