A groom-to-be has died after he was flung to his death from a hot air balloon.

Julián Andrés Martínez was attempting to rescue people trapped inside the large balloon when he was dragged off his feet and thrown into the air.

Spectators watched on in horror as during the Colors in the Sky festival in Aguazul, east-north-east of Bogotá, Colombia a strong gust of wind brought the hot air balloon hurtling towards the ground with people still inside.

Several heroic individuals attempted to bring the balloon under control to save those still inside. This included the 34-year-old Mr Martínez.

Mr Martínez grabbed onto a rope attached to the balloon and was tossed about 16ft (5 meters) off the ground.

After he fell to the ground, the talented paraglider from Sopó near Bogotáwas then rushed to a local hospital.  Tragically, he died from his injuries in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to social media, Mr Martínez was engaged to his girlfriend Adriana Quintero.

Local government official Sonia Lozano said: ‘In a moment of panic, seeing the balloon rising, this person likely tried to do something to help.

‘But things didn’t go as expected, and we don’t know exactly what happened.

‘At one point, he let go of the balloon and fell at the site where the accident occurred.’

Two other people sustained burns in the hot air balloon accident, according to reports.

Paragliders later paid tribute to him by laying wings at the spot where he fell.

The Aguazul mayor’s office said in a statement: ‘We ask for prudence and respect towards the private organisers of the event.

‘This is not the time for blame, as it is up to the proper authorities to determine if there were any responsibilities or procedural errors.’
