Wild footage of a violent altercation between a postie and a cyclist on the side of the road has divided Aussies over who was really in the wrong.

Codey Lamos spotted the two men brawling under his apartment building on Old Coach Road in Mudgeeraba, on the Gold Coast, at around midday on Friday.

Mr Lamos told Daily Mail he believes a punch to the postie’s side-mirror sparked the violence – but it was the postal worker who had started it.

‘I heard old mate [the cyclist] saying he had been cut off and something had been thrown at his face,’ he recalled.

‘Then [the cyclist] followed the postman into complex and that’s what I captured.’

Mr Lamos understands a projectile had allegedly been thrown at the cyclists’ face and drawn blood just moments before the stand-off.

In the footage, a cyclist with his lycra largely unzipped could be seen approaching the side of a postal van and smacking the mirror.

The postie then leapt from the driver’s seat and rushed toward him.

The cyclist then raised his fists, unleashing a chain of expletives and inviting the driver to ‘have a go’.

As the postie tried to get back in his van, the cyclist tried to close the door on his legs, prompting the driver to get back out of the vehicle.

The men continued to exchange blows – with the postie at one point throwing his scanner at the man before eventually admitting defeat.

As the postie got back in his car, the cyclist shut the door on him once again, but this time he drove away.

Aussies were divided over who was at fault with some siding with the cyclist.

‘Half the drivers don’t look or care what they’re doing, I had one the other day pull out in front of me while he was talking on the phone, with my grandbabies in the car. He didn’t give a s**t,’ one woman wrote.

However, others jumped to defend the postie.

‘Cyclists are always in the wrong. Even though the law states they are always in the right,’ one person said.

‘I know the postie came out on top but I still feel bad for him. No one should be treated like this at work,’ one wrote.

‘Postie tossed between losing his job or losing his patience,’ a third shared.

‘Imagine if you were waiting all day for a delivery and this was the reason you didn’t get your package,’ a fourth joked.

Queensland Police have been contacted for comment.
