Given the current state of US politics, one could be forgiven for wanting Martin Sheen back in the White House at the next available opportunity as the actor attended the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday evening.

Sheen, who famously played fictional President Jed Bartlet in The West Wing, reunited with his former co-stars at the annual ceremony, some 18-years after the hugely successful political drama came to an end.

The legendary actor, 84, was joined by Allison Janney,  Dulé Hill, Richard Schiff and Janel Moloney onstage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on the 25th anniversary of the show’s premiere while presenting the award for Outstanding Drama Series.

Janney, 64 – Press Secretary C.J Cregg in the hit show – radiated old Hollywood glamour in a black and red silk gown with-off-the-shoulder detailing while announcing Shōgun as the winner.

Meanwhile Schiff, 69, who played Communications Director Toby Ziegler across the show’s seven-year run, shared a red carpet kiss with actress Jazmyn Simon while posing for photos ahead of this year’s ceremony.

Addressing the audience on Sunday evening, Sheen said: ‘From 1999 to 2006, I had the honor of playing the President of the United States on an extraordinary series created by Aaron Sorkin and produced by John Wells.’

Hill, 49 – best known for his role as Presidential aide Charlie Young – added: ‘It was an honour to serve in the fictional administration of The West Wing.’

The group was completed by Moloney, 54, who took a recurring role as Senior Assistant Donna Moss as they were introduced while gathered in a staged Oval Office.

But central cast-members Rob Lowe and Bradley Whitford – who respectively played Communications Director Sam Seaborn and Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman – were notably absent from proceedings.

The cast are no stranger to the Emmys, with The West Wing winning 27 awards from 98 nominations at the annual ceremony following its launch in September 1999.

Sunday’s appearance acknowledged the show’s 25th anniversary, Janney and Schiff referenced the current political backdrop while discussing its impact.

‘It’s hard to believe that just 25 years ago, Aaron and the writers actually had to use their imaginations to create interesting plotlines for The West Wing,’ she said.

Schiff added: ‘Unlike today, where storylines can be plucked right off the news – storylines that writers would have deemed a bit far-fetched, if not utterly ridiculous, 25 years ago.’
