A scorching heatwave could see the mercury rise close to 40C in one state while a cold blast is set to leave Aussies shivering elsewhere.
In Western , Perth will experience balmy temperatures in the mid to high 20Cs over the coming days, but the northern and inland parts of the state could feel the heat soar.
‘We could see it go very close to 40C, but it doesn’t look likely,’ Weatherzone meteorologist Angus Konta said.
Despite the Northern Territory also getting weather in the mid to high 30Cs, the rest of the country is set to shiver.
‘The south-east feels like a return to winter almost, with a few cold fronts coming through,’ Mr Konta said.
‘You sometimes see this sort of thing happening around this time of year where we see almost summer like conditions, but winter type conditions in other areas.’
Melbourne and Hobart have had cool days, but a cold front will come through on Friday and Saturday.
‘And that will make temperatures very winter-like, so pretty much in the low teens for Melbourne,’ Mr Konta said.
‘It may sit below 10C for Hobart on Saturday.’
Despite Adelaide not getting as cold as Melbourne or Hobart, it is still likely to be a cold day on Saturday and the mercury will reach a low 15C.
‘But we could also see some pretty cold mornings. They dropped down to 5C on Thursday morning and we could see some more mornings like that – right through to the start of next week,’ Mr Konta said.
The southerly change is moving up the east coast, ending the warm conditions Sydney experienced at the start of spring.
‘It dropped to a low 20C on Thursday but it feels quite a bit colder because of the southerly winds,’ Mr Konta said.
The weather is expected to get milder in Sydney, however the cold front from Tasmania and Victoria will come through by Sunday.
‘It looks like another cold day with a shower as well, with Canberra impacted on Saturday,’ Mr Konta said.
But Brisbane will be the city with the most rain, with a trough creating a wet Thursday, with more downpours expected on Sunday.
‘It’s not necessarily cold but pretty “rainy” – but the southerly will come through from Friday and cool the temperatures down,’ Mr Konta said.
‘Despite this, Brisbane still has a chance of staying dry as the showers are coastal.’
