An n radio star may have already saved several lives after announcing her shock cancer diagnosis live on-air this week.

Adelaide radio star Ali Clarke, who co-hosts Max & Ali in the Morning with Max Burford, broke down on Tuesday when she revealed she had breast cancer.

The segment has prompted hundreds of n women to get a check-up.

BreastScreen SA Program Director Lauren Civetta says that Clarke’s admission had resulted in almost 800 women across the state booking a cancer screening.

Civetta publicly thanked Clarke for sharing her story after 779 women across SA booked a mammogram – more than double the average number of 350.

‘There was an uptick at this highly emotional time. 15 minutes can save your life,’ Civetta said in a statement.

A similar situation occurred after pop princess Kylie Minogue revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2005, which led to a surge in cancer screenings across and the UK.

Minogue was declared cancer-free in 2006.

Clarke told listeners on Tuesday that she will be taking a break from her radio show as she undergoes treatment.

‘It was important to tell our listeners because I have had the privilege of them trusting me with their stories, so I trust them with mine,’ she explained.

‘I also know that so many of our listeners have either lived through having cancer or know someone who has… even worse there will be lots of people who might have listened this morning or are reading this who have lost someone they love to this awful disease. Over the last few weeks, I’ve thought of their loss a lot.’

Ali asked one of her co-hosts to hold her hand before bravely making the devastating announcement.

‘The long and the short of it means that I am going to have a full mastectomy. Which means they’re taking one of my boobs. And if I’m honest, it’s probably been that bit that’s been much more confronting than I ever thought it will be,’ she said.

‘I thought it was very small and manageable. But found quite a lot of small little cancers. And so that means that I’ll be going in for some pretty big surgery later this week, and I’ll have to take some time off to recover as you can imagine.’

The radio host then broke down in tears as she emotionally opened up about ‘losing a part’ of herself.

Despite the heartbreaking diagnosis, Ali admitted she is ‘so freakin’ lucky’ regarding the quality of healthcare she’s received so far.
