A homeowner captured incredible footage of a plane crashing into a forest of trees right outside their house in Maine.
The single engine Cessna 150 aircraft was caught on camera skimming the treeline just as the aircraft was attempting to make an emergency landing, barely a mile away from the nearest airport.
In the footage, the plane soars overhead before making a quick turn leading into its final descent.
The crash occurred on Swan’s Island near Bar Harbor on Thursday evening just before 6 pm.
In the moments before the crash, the aircraft narrowly missed a low-hanging powerline before finally plowing into a bank of trees.
In the dramatic clip, the treeline’s branches seemingly cushion the aircraft’s collision, with the plane remaining intact on impact.
‘It happened so fast that it was hard to process in the moment,’ said Meghan Joyce to Fox 22, who captured the heart-stopping incident.
‘He said he was trying to land and realized he couldn’t and was trying to take back off,’ Joyce said.
Pictures from the scene of the accident show the aircraft nearly vertical with its nose pointed straight into the ground.
Incredibly, the pilot, who was the only person who was on board, sustained only minor injuries, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
Joyce said the pilot escaped the wreckage with just a broken nose.
‘When I got there he was trying to get out. He said he was fine. I was more worked up than he was, he was like, “I’m fine, I’m fine, calm down I’m good.” He walked out of the plane, crawled out of it, and walked away from it,’ Joyce explained.
The FAA said the National Transportation Safety Board is now leading the investigation into the accident.
The woman who filmed the captivating footage says the crash occurred less than a mile from a privately owned airport.
FAA documents show the plane is registered to Robert Kohut who is from Sag Harbor, New York, but lives on Swan’s Island, Maine.
‘It’s not something I recommend anyone has to watch or experience,’ Joyce said.
‘But he did great.’
