For any red-blooded fan of motorsports it is a treasure trove of memorabilia beyond their wildest dreams.
But after 50 years of amassing the world’s biggest collection of speedway bikes and mementoes, a Scots pensioner has decided to sell them off for a cool £1million.
Former Berwick Bandits racer Ian Paterson owns a staggering 110 motorcycles and more than 400 race vests, helmets, trophies and other trinkets, which were displayed at Cinders to Shale Museum in Edinburgh.
Now aged in his 80s and in failing health, he has reluctantly decided to sell his collection so that his wife does not have to sort it out.
All the bikes have been transported 350 miles to HJ Pugh & Co, in Ledbury, Herefordshire, for the forthcoming auction.
The process took six days and involved two articulated lorries, six vans and six trailers.
There are models ranging from the 1920s to 2000, including a rare 1927 Red Indian bike which raced on American dirt-tracks and is valued at £100,000.
The 850-lots sale is expected to spark worldwide interest with collectors from Poland, New Zealand and Canada set to bid on it.
Auctioneer Henry Biss said: ‘Ian raced at a high level for Berwick Bandits before retiring about 50 years ago and since then he has put together the biggest speedway collection in the world.
‘He is now in ill health and feels that it is right to sell the collection now so his wife does not have to take care of it.
‘There are fantastic early bikes including the Red Indian and James Vee twins, as well as race jackets, race suits and trophies.
‘It was a logistical challenge which took six days to transport the entire collection down here involving two articulated lorries, vans and trailers.
‘I’ve been doing this (auctioneering) for 12 years and I’ve not seen a collection like this before, and I don’t expect to for the rest of my career.
‘It is unique and special.
‘Speedway is a niche sport but there is a fanatical worldwide fanbase, including in Poland, New Zealand and Canada.’
The sale takes place on July 5-6.
