A man has been arrested in the Euro 2024 host city of Hamburg after allegedly threatening to blow up an apartment block, German media reports.
Large numbers of police were at the scene, including specialist officers, after the suspect barricaded himself in the building armed with a knife, according to BILD.
The street was cordoned off and a safety barrier reportedly set up in front of the house in case the suspect attempted to jump from the window.
The building is in the Eimsbüttel district of the city, a few miles from the city’s stadium which is hosting tournament matches.
The tense stand off took place as fans attended this afternoon’s match between Croatia and Albania.
It is just the latest security scare to occur in the city during the European Championship tournament.
Ahead of Sunday’s match between Poland and the Netherlands, a man was seen wielding what police described as an axe and a Molotov cocktail – a home-made incendiary device.
The suspect was shot in the leg by police and has since been charged with attempted manslaughter.
The incident took place in the city’s St Pauli district, an area where a large number of Netherlands supporters had gathered ahead of their match against Poland.
