A desperate search is underway for a surfer who disappeared in the water after getting into difficulty.

The man went missing at Surfers Point at Prevelley, about three hours south of Perth, at 4.35pm on Friday.

Another surfer spotted the man, believed to be in his 40s, and noticed he needed assistance but was unable to reach him due to rough conditions.

‘A number of police and emergency services were deployed to the area and a preliminary search of the water and beach area was undertaken,’ a police spokesperson said.

‘At this time the surfer has not been located.’

On Saturday, local marine rescue and jet skis joined the search before it was halted around midday due to rough conditions.

The location is known internationally as one of the locations for the Margaret River Pro, which was held across 10 days in April.

It’s not the first time a surfing incident has been reported in the area.

WA surfing stalwart Frank Hayter died following a fatal surfing incident at Surfers Point on August 21, 2021.

Other surfers helped to release the 65-year-old’s body from his leg rope which had been caught in the reef, ABC News reported at the time.

Mr Hayter was a much-loved figure in the Margaret River surfing community, having started the Scarborough Boardriders Club over 30 years ago.

He won several national and state titles over his career.

Surfer’s Point remains closed with members of the public advised to avoid the area.
