An iconic noughties band have sent fans wild by announcing a shock comeback that will see them release a new album and embark on an arena tour.

Confirming a new single and the release of their eighth LP, the record – which is the group’s first in six years – will come out on September 13.

A statement regarding the forthcoming album described it as ‘an album rooted in reflection, introspection and interrogation’ while centering on ‘the idea of love from the distance of time’.

The band have also announced details of a UK and Ireland tour in February 2025.

Snow Patrol have confirmed that their comeback album, titled The Forest Path, will feature 12 tracks and was written by Gary Lightbody, Nathan Connolly and Johnny McDaid.

Speaking about one of the new singles on the album, which was written when the group embarked on a trip to Somerset, Gary said: ‘The first day we wrote ‘The Beginning’, start to finish,’ per NME.

Johnny added: ‘And he did the vocal in one take. Straight after writing the lyrics. So it has this mind-collapsing quality to it where you feel like you’re seeing into someone’s soul.’

Elaborating on the thoughts and ideas that went into recording the new album’s tracks, Gary continued: ‘I haven’t been in a relationship for a very long time, 10 years or more, so love from a distance to me meant the way a relationship sits in your memory from a distance of, say, 10 years.

‘That’s not something I’d previously thought about as a way to write about love.So it’s like, when you’re in love, you’re standing in the lobby of the Empire State Building. When you’ve broken up with that person, you’re out in the street.

‘You can still see the building, but you’re not in there anymore. And when it’s 10 years later, now you’re standing in Brooklyn looking at the Manhattan skyline.’

Due to tour the album in February 2025, Snow Patrol will play sets in London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Hull, Glasgow, Manchester, Dublin and Belfast.

The announcement of a comeback tour and new album comes after former bassist Paul Wilson and ex-drummer Jonny Quinn left the band last year.

Guitarist Nathan Connolly also launched a solo career last year, which saw him release his debut record, The Strange Order Of Things.

Johnny will be missed by his fiancée, former Friends star Courteney Cox, 59, who previously revealed that he dumped her one minute into their first therapy session – only for them to get back together again.

Speaking to the Minnie Questions podcast last month, she said: ‘Johnny and I broke up five years ago. So three years in we broke up and it was really intense. We broke up in therapy.

‘I didn’t know it was coming. Whether I should have or not, it was just like we went to this therapist to talk about our boundaries – what we could and couldn’t accept about each other.

‘Instead, he just broke up within the first minute. And I was like “What?” And we were engaged. And I was so shocked, I was in so much pain, I also don’t like surprises.

‘I’m so thankful for that break-up because a, when we got back together it was a different relationship, but also because it really taught me how I operated in the world – what were the things from my childhood that I needed.
