Most of the country will cop a drenching this week as a series of cold fronts move across .

A band of rain over Western will head east through to the weekend and bring wet weather to 80 per cent of the country.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Christie Johnson said the rain will start heading east from Wednesday.

‘We can see rainfall across inland parts of WA and even by the end of the day, extending into western parts of South ,’ she said.

‘As we move into Thursday, that system continues its way across the country with a cloud band extending from the Kimberley right across the Northern Territory into South and, by the end of the day, western parts of NSW, Victoria and Tasmania.’

Ms Johnson warned strong winds generated by the system could affect western and southern Tasmania and alpine regions in Victoria and NSW.

‘On Friday though, that system does tend to track eastwards with the rainfall mostly contracting to north-eastern NSW,’ she said.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino explained the wet conditions are due to a ‘blocking high pressure pattern that has dominated ‘s weather over the past two months finally breaking down’.

‘This week’s wet and stormy weather will mainly target WA from Monday to Wednesday, before spreading across central and southern on Thursday, and then eastern from Friday into the weekend,’ he said.

‘A second rain-bearing system could also bring follow-up rain to parts of WA from Saturday or Sunday.

‘The two systems combined should soak about 70 to 80 per cent of , and some parts of the country could see rain every day this week.’
