An elderly pedestrian was knocked down and killed by a hit and run driver on Thursday morning, just hours after a motorcyclist died in one of a series of horror crashes across Queensland overnight.

The man in his 70s was struck by a mystery car at Kittyhawk Drive and Murphy Road in Brisbane’s Chernside at approximately 5.15am.

Paramedics found him in a critical condition suffering head, pelvis and leg injuries and he was rushed t Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition, but later died.

Police are continuing to look for the vehicle involved and investigations remain ongoing, said a spokesman

Just two hours earlier, a motorcyclist is believed to have died after a smash at 3.20am near Hendra in Brisbane at the on-ramp to the Southern Cross Way.

Ambulance workers found the biker in a critical condition but he is reported to have later died.

The key city centre route was shut down in the wake of the accident but has since re-opened with reduced lanes.

The driver, 29, of a Toyota SUV was also airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after a head-on smash overnight with a Jeep SUV on the Bruce Highway near Curra, north of the Sunshine Coast.

The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old Mulambin man, received minor injuries and was transported to the Gympie Hospital.

And in a fourth accident a woman was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after a two vehicle crash near Yarraman, north-west of Brisbane, overnight.

Initial investigations indicate around 8pm a 4WD was headed west on the D’Anguilar Highway when it has collided with a truck heading in the opposite direction.

The driver of the 4WD was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious condition.

A female passenger received only minor injuries and the truck driver was not physically injured.
