Two people have died after a light plane crashed into a mountain range in regional Queensland.

A man and a woman, aged 73 and 75, were on board but authorities have called the crash, which occurred in the Pioneer Ranges, west of Mackay on Saturday, ‘unsurvivable’.

Emergency services were alerted on Saturday around 9am after witnesses reported seeing the aircraft come down near Finch Hatton.

A rescue helicopter crew spotted the wreckage in mountainous terrain around 11.30am.

An RACQ spokesperson described the crash site as ‘unsurvivable’.

Rescue teams were attempting to gain access to the remote site on Sunday to retrieve the bodies.

It is believed that the elderly pair crashed into a ‘mountainous, inaccessible area’ near Finch Hatton, 63km west of Mackay on Saturday morning. 

The n Transport and Safety Bureau was notified of the accident and is beginning an investigation.
