The search has resumed as of 6.30am, with police, lifesavers and an ambulance helicopter expected to contribute.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said the man had failed to resurface, sparking the widespread search.

Surf Life Saving NSW city branch duty officer John Restuccia said crews searched the rocks as far south as Bronte Bogey Hole, near the baths, before suspending the search overnight.

According to Mr Restuccia, two swimmers had got caught in the rip, but only one was so far able to be located and rescued.
