Brittany Higgins was rushed to hospital in Perth on Tuesday evening.

The former Liberal staffer was treated at Royal Perth Hospital at 11pm on Tuesday night, The West n reported.

Ms Higgins’ hospital visit came just hours after a nine-hour-long mediation session at the WA Supreme Court with her former boss Senator Linda Reynolds failed.

She reportedly spent several hours in the emergency department but was not admitted into a hospital ward.

On Wednesday night, Senator Reynolds called the negotiations ‘difficult and testing’ and wished Ms Higgins ‘a swift recovery’.

Legal negotiations are unfortunately sometimes difficult and testing for all participants and yesterday was a tiring and difficult day for all of us,’ Senator Reynolds told The n.

‘I attempted to minimise stress by avoiding any direct contact that may have been confronting and relying on a very experienced judge to interact with Ms Higgins.’

Senator Higgins revealed she proposed a two-week pause in the case ‘to enable Miss Higgins and all parties to recover and get past the stress of the court attendance and significant media attention’.

While it is unclear why she attended hospital on this occasion, Ms Higgins previously spent five days in a mental health clinic during the first trial of her accused rapist.

She was admitted to a clinic after being found walking the streets of Canberra alone in the rain in October 2022.

She then returned to the courtroom to complete her cross examination.

The details could only be reported after the lifting of a Supreme Court suppression order, following the decision to abandon a second trial of her alleged rapist.

On Wednesday morning, Daily Mail revealed a planned conference between Ms Higgins and her partner Mr Sharaz and Senator Reynolds scheduled later that day had been sensationally scrapped.

It is unclear whether Ms Higgins’ hospital visit played any role in that decision.

Senator Reynolds is suing both Ms Higgins and her fiance David Sharaz, individually, over a series of social media posts she claims defamed her reputation.

Ms Higgins and Mr Sharaz permanently relocated to France at the end of last year, having bought a house near Bordeaux.

They had no plans to return to , but they were forced to attend a court-ordered mediation session in Perth on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It was designed to prevent a costly trial.

The group walked into court at 10am on Tuesday and left just before 7pm, without a resolution. Wednesday’s session was then shelved.

A trial is now expected to go ahead, likely to begin in May and lasting for six weeks.

The two parties did not even come face-to-face on Tuesday because Senator Reynolds wanted her own room at court.

Daily Mail understands Ms Reynolds opted for a private room on Tuesday, away from the couple, which meant a mediator had to travel between the parties all day.

It is also understood Ms Higgins was not allowed to bring a support person, which is why her best friend Emma Webster was absent.

Ms Webster was by the side of the Ms Higgins throughout both Bruce Lehrmann’s criminal trial and when Ms Higgins faced court for his defamation action against Network Ten and Lisa Wilkinson.

When approached by Daily Mail on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Ms Reynolds said: ‘Discussions between the parties are ongoing today.’

‘There will be no further comment.’

Heading into court on Tuesday morning, Hs Higgins told reporters she believes everyone was heading into the session ‘in good faith’.

Neither she nor Mr Sharaz answered any questions when they left the court with their lawyers later that evening.

Ms Reynolds left with her lawyer Martin Bennett and her partner Robert Reid.

‘Long day,’ she told waiting media, grinning broadly.

‘It’s still ongoing so it’s not appropriate for me to comment on it yet.’

Monday’s session was held because Judge Marcus Solomon urged the parties to resolve the issue before going to trial, citing immense costs that are often associated with defamation proceedings.

Ms Reynolds’ defamation case centres on social media posts fired off by Ms Higgins and Mr Sharaz.

She claims the posts implied that she pressured Ms Higgins not to proceed with a police complaint regarding her alleged rape, and that she interfered with Mr Lehrmann’s criminal trial.

Ms Higgins is also accused of breaching a non-disparagement clause in a settlement contract she entered in 2021 that prevents her from speaking negatively about Ms Reynolds.

The senator is seeking aggravated damages, an injunction to stop Ms Higgins from publishing allegedly defamatory material, and another injunction to stop her from breaching the settlement contract.

Ms Reynolds is simultaneously suing Mr Sharaz separately for allegedly defaming her in five social media posts, which were allegedly ‘falsely defamatory’ and caused her ‘loss and damage’.

It comes just months after Ms Reynolds sought to freeze Ms Higgins’ assets.

Ms Higgins received about $2.4million from the taxpayer in 2022 based on claims her political career was in ruins after she alleged she was raped by former colleague Bruce Lehrmann in Parliament House in 2019.

Mr Lehrmann has continually denied the allegations and is currently suing Channel 10 and Lisa Wilkinson – who broke the story on The Project in 2021 – for defamation.
